HP Dips Into Dell Personnel
Published by: mike 2008-11-20

Dell CIO Randall D. Mott crossed enemy lines Monday, joining HP to pump up the way the rebounding company handles its information and technology assets.

Mott will serve as executive vice president and CIO, replacing Gilles Bouchard, who will remain executive vice president of global operations.

The new hire will oversee the way internal information is handled at HP, including data management, technology infrastructure, application development, data center operations and telecommunication networks.

Mott previously worked at Dell, where he has served since 2000 as senior vice president and CIO, managing the Round Rock, Texas, company's global IT organization.

He has extensive experience in retail, having worked for Wal-Mart for 22 years before joining Dell. Mott is also credited with automating Wal-Mart's retail and supply-chain systems.

Mott will also become the 11th member of HP executive council, reporting directly to HP President and CEO Mark Hurd. For Hurd, hiring Mott is a coup over rival Dell, highlighting the competitive nature of the business.

"Randy Mott is an outstanding executive with a distinguished track record of running highly efficient, world-class IT operations for complex organizations," said Hurd in a statement. "He will serve as a key leader in enhancing the effectiveness of our IT operations and in helping to drive HP continued growth."

The new hire is the latest in a string of changes, both in structure and personnel, Hurd has made to improve operations since taking the helm from Carly Fiorina in April.

In June, the executive split the Personal Systems Group (PSG) and Imaging and Personal Systems Group (IPG) Fiorina had soldered into standalone units.

Hurd tabbed former palmOne skipper Todd Bradley to lead PSG as executive vice president. Vyomesh Joshi, who had served as executive vice president of the combined PSG group, resumed his former role as executive vice president of IPG.

Arguably HP most successful business, IPG sells printer, imaging and supplies, projectors and digital cameras. The Palo Alto, Calif., company yesterday launched its Big Bang, a breakthrough inkjet printing technology that delivers record levels of speed to printers in the home and office.

To improve the company's ability to sell itself, Hurd also named veteran HP executive Cathy Lyons executive vice president and chief marketing officer.
