antique wooden carsol horses

Published by: jane 2010-03-14

  • I would like to buy a horse from a merry go round a carasol horse.This is my first horse for a private party;

  • Hi Carol- EasterAngel has provided you with some interesting links. However, let me suggest that before you purchase a carousel horse, you may want to investigate the rich history and lore of carousels. Doing so will help you decide on the style and vintage of horse you want. Among the types of horses available are American and European; antique, reproduction, modern and outright fake. They can be made of wood, metal, fiberglass or plastic. For a brief overview of "What makes a carousel horse valualble?" see the PBS Antiques Road Show discussion "Riding the Carousel Market" http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/roadshow/series/highlights/2003/seattle/seattle_follow4.html American carousels are divided into three major categories and the horses in each category are very distinctive. Country Fair Style animals, built by carvers such as Allan Herschell, are generally the most affordable. They are also less ornate and often smaller. The Coney Island horses, built by carvers and companies such as Charles Looff, M.C. Illions, Charles Carmel, and Stein & Goldstein, are known for their flowing waterfall manes and rose-bouquet carvings. The name derives from the place these horses frolicked: the Coney Island, New York amusement park Philadelphia style horse, carved by Dentzel and Cernigliaro and the Muller brothers at Philadelphia Toboggan Company are among the most prized. On each carousel, there are different styles of horses like standers, jumpers, star gazers, Indian ponies, etc. Each of these has a different stance. Then there are differences in the horses that stood on the outter (more fancy) and inner circles of the carousel. Inner horses are often less expensive. Also, be aware that horses have a fancy side and a plain side. The side toward the outside of the carousel was more elaborately carved than the inner side which was not seen unless you were on the machine. I'd suggest you start your research with these three books. They will give a good feel for the different styles and help you choose the kind you want. These are wonderful books and great introductions to carousel art. Painted Ponies by William Manns, Peggy Shank and Marianne Stevens. Zon International Publishing Company, 1987. The Art of the Carousel by Charlotte Dinger. Carousel Art, 1984. A Pictorial History of the Carousel by Frederick Freid A subscription to CAROUSEL TRADER MAGAZINE is pretty much a must for anyone interested in buying or selling carousel items. • Hi Carol - I'd be pleased to help you find a carousel horse. Carousels have been a life-long interest of mine, and I have done a bit of research on and writing about them. However, it would be most helpful if you could tell us a little bit more about what you are seeking. For instance, do you have an idea of what kind of horse you want? By that I mean both what style: stander, jumper, Indian pony, etc. and what carver e.g. Hershell, Dentzel, Parker, etc. ? Also what is your price range? Horses range from under $1,000 to $50,000 and more. Are you looking for a restored figure or one with original paint? Are shipping costs a factor? If so, in what general location are you? Are you interested only in a horse or would some other animal also be of interest? Do you wish a researcher to list horses that are for sale or rather to provide a list of reputable dealers? I'd suggest the latter if you are relatively new to carousel figure collecting. Any additional information you can provide will help a researcher to better answer your question. Thank you. • Hi! Thanks for the question. I have found three websites which specifically sells the types of horses that you want. They are in different positions and since "standing on 3 legs one raise or something like that" is not so important I will leave it to you to look at the whole gallery itself. But if you desire these horse positions these websites have them as well. Some are also within your budget but others could get more expensive since they are antiques. My Carousel http://www.mycarousel.com/index_01.htm The Antique Horse http://www.theantiquehorse.com/carousel_figures.htm The Carousel Workshop http://www.carouselworkshop.com/horses.html#ANTIQUES Our next link is an antique carousel animals classified ads website. You could find antique carousel horses here as well. Antique Carousel Animals http://carouselclassifieds.com/index.php?kid=1&catname=Antique+Carousel+Animals Search terms used: "antique carousel horses" "+for sale" I hope these links would help you in your research. Before rating this answer, please ask for a clarification if you have a question or if you would need further information. Thanks for visiting us. Regards, Easterangel-ga Google Answers Researcher
