The team was established in 1972 and was called the New England Whalers. Howard Baldwin, Godfrey Wood, William Barned and John Coburn founded the team. The season 2000- 01 brought them face to face with New Jersey Devils. The sixth game at Raleigh despite their loss was closed by a standing ovation by the audience for the Hurricanes. The 05-06 season was the biggest surprise for the Hurricane fans. The Canes scored a record 52-22-8 and 112 points. They broke the earlier Whalers franchisee record.
