Higher gas prices have increased demand for better train service. Why not start using the high speed (200-300 mph) trains that are used in France and Japan? This could be done almost immediately. That would put a trip from Atlanta to New York at about three hours. Another idea: combine passenger trains with freight trains for more options and better efficiency.. With the airlines cutting back service and charging money for a glass of water, the trains really have a golden opportunity. Luxury cars could even be offered. Great question.
There was a train show a few months ago and a speaker was talking about the same thing. When a diesel locomotive gets warmed up, it gets hundreds of miles to the gallon, which would make it a wonderful option in travel.
Problem is that over the past few decades, the US has systematically been tearing up rail lines, thinking they're obsolete. In addition, thanks to organizations like the Teamsters, much of the freight in the US is moved via trucks. Which is the opposite in places like Europe that has an extensive rail network.
I lived in Europe for 3 years and loved the fact that I could get almost anywhere on rail, and that it was inexpensive. Of course the US is larger than Europe, but they need to stop taking apart the rail infrastructure and begin reinvesting in rail networks.
