committee, stresses treatment research
At a Senate Committee hearing on suicide prevention held by the Labor,
Health and Human Services, and Education Subcommittee in Washington in
February, 2000, J. John Mann, MD, Chair of AFSP's Scientific Council
presented a comprehensive plan for the research, education, and
treatment needed to prevent suicide. Testimony was also heard from
Surgeon General David Satcher; Dr. Kay Jamison, AFSP Scientific
Advisory Council Member; Dr. Steven Hyman, Director of NIMH; Danielle
Steele, author and survivor; and Jade Smalls, Miss America 2000's

An Understanding of Suicide
Speaker: Kay Redfield Jamison, Ph.D, author and Professor of
Psychiatry, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
Dr. Jamison emphasized that living with thoughts of suicide can
undermine, devastate, and destroy personality. Reading from the
prologue of her book, Night Falls Fast, she recalled that in her
senior year of high school, she perceived suicide as the solution to
an unendurable level of mental pain. Though gradually the depression
lifted, it returned in later years. As a 28-year-old junior faculty
member with damaging mania and psychotic depression, she took a
massive dose of lithium and nearly died.

Miss Illinois spends year's reign advocating for mental health awareness
When a close friend of Miss Illinois 1999, Jade Smalls, committed
suicide, the pageant winner felt a very deep loss. On February 8, the
Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human
Services, Education, and Related Agencies held a hearing on suicide
prevention that included testimony from Jade. She spoke of the
immediate need to educate youth about mental illnesses that can lead
to suicide when not detected early and treated appropriately.
