I wouldn't think it should have been needed, but does anyone else think we need to have a Sticky for the rules of posting in this forum... such as (not saying these are official or anything, just my suggestion):
2 player TCP/IP game (with 5 AI) - Apolyton Civilization Site Forums::
11 posts - 4 authors - Last post: Dec 8, 20082 player TCP/IP game (with 5 AI) AC Multiplaying. Did you even bother to read the title and the post. Is anyone else interested in this

Don't post the same question over, and over, and over again in a whole bunch of different places (I'm sure this is already a rule somewhere else)

Don't ask people to write code for you, ask genuine questions on how to either fix your code, or how to point you in the right direction.

Don't post a new topic for each new 'version' of your game. Just add to one topic, and let people know that way that your game is still being worked on. The only exception to this rule I would see is if you are working on a game, have one topic that you keep amending, and then when the project is 100% complete, you can post it in a new topic to say its done.. perhaps.

Don't post just for the sake of posting, and try to keep on topic (thanks BlueBoots ;))

SEARCH BEFORE YOU POST A NEW TOPIC! man, if i see one more question about "how do I make these walls work", I'm going to scream! :!:

That's just a suggestion, I don't know if anyone feels the same way, or if anyone thinks that there is a problem... I just got a little aggravated by seeing people trying to get other people to hand them entire code for a game, and/or posting 6 or 7 topics with the exact same question, or a slight variation of the same question. If any of the mods think these are good, or whatever, I think there are several people who would be so very relieved to see some changes... :beam:

  • .....I know the last post in this thread is kinda old. But I just had to say something to the posts above.
What is wrong with people searching for a game team? That is how teams start, not to mention you can't do a real game alone. The person you claim to be starting the team but can't do anything in flash is actualy doing something.... he/she is the one starting the group, which is getting the people together so that the material need for the game will filled. he/she also may have a good idea or two that could spice up the game. Not pointing fingers or anything, but you can't really say anythign bad about these people because untill you are in their group and everythign is underway, you really don't know what they can do for the project.

  • Yah, i felt the same. Every time i come to this site, i always see repetition in the threads. That's why i haven't posted for a very very long time. There should be a rule like: you are not allowed to make a thread unless it's about you're code(not just asking for code)....wait a minute, there's already a rule for that.

Anyways, another rule would be...newbs, don't ask questions on RPGs

  • Yea, I will agree that some of them need to be a bit more reasonable. Lately they have been laying off more so. But its mainly because everyone doesn't read this section anymore for the same reason you stated.

Even tho FL4shN3//B78 quote is a bit direct and he says he doesn't know anything about it, it is a learning experience for him and a fun job for others. I don't know about everyone else, but I have been progressing well in ActionScript and view any project as a fun challange. So in some ways, some people may respond in a nice fashion to that quote. I am just saying that even tho it is a bit extreme, it is still a ok request that can be taken advantage of from new flash users to unite and learn at a faster rate.

  • How do i make counter strike in flash? Thank you

Jokes aside you get people asking questions like that all over the place (even on my forum ultrashock). Sad thing is the people who post questions like that are never going to read a forum rules thread. Great idea though :trout:

  • How do i make these walls work?

  • Anyone else notice how many people are making RPG games, and wanting an entire team to join them and they have no experience in flash or very little.

    Also.
--You should be able to show your game first if your asking for a graphic/ sprite designer.

//edit, and i've kept myself from posting this for a little white till i saw the latest threads.

  • I think that part about writing the code for other people is just annoying, just the fact you have such threads out there makes me laugh about the laziness of certain ppl ;)

  • Yes. No more posting and getting people to do stuff for you.

  • Well i'm not going to make a new thread about this, but there has been a recent surge of some pretty lame threads going on here in the game programming forum. ie: people asking insanely general questions like "I need help on {insert game type here}. I am new to flash and any help would be appreciated" or "I'm trying to make a {insert game system element here} for my game. How do I do it". And of course none offer code or anything. I don't want to link to threads or name names here, but there have been like 5 horrible horrible threads recently that are like this.

It kind of makes me want to not come to the Game/AI Programming forum, but I think it has so much more potential than it's being used for right now.

Ok, I just want to rant it out to see if anyone else felt the same... how can we control these posts??!!?

  • I haven't really seen that too much... I have some people Hijack threads now and then, but I do think that's an overall Forum-wide rule... I'm going to edit my first post to add those in... :D

  • And thus, it is in everyone's best interest if you use some descriptive name in the title of your post (I'm not directing this at you, btw, just in general). I wonder if we could get Kirupa to break this section down into different catagories... well... I don't think it would be that good of an idea.... I dunno what needs to be changed, but, something should be fixed in our methods.

  • Anyways, another rule would be...newbs, don't ask questions on RPGs
    Tell me about it... :crying:

Seriously, I'm making this tutorial to help point people in the right direction, and you'd of thought that I was volunteering to write free RPGs for people...

Now, I can see if you have a question about the tutorial, or to have something explained, but use what I've started to go off on your own direction... Gah...

Hopefully, within a month I'll have the rest of it finished...

  • lol I asked the walls question on my last thread, but it's one of quite a few questions I got. I'm only asking one or two questions at a time to keep it as to-the-point as possible. Please don't delete that topic because I'm going to have more questions later. By the way, thanks for all the great stuff you guys are doing here.

You have my vote on that one :thumb:
    and the others too :)

  • Yup! Thanks to kirupa for Sticky-ing this! :beam:

I think it depends on the situation... I'm sure you've seen an over-abundance of posts that are something like:

Hey guyS!!!111 I want to make a game like Mario!
And I want to have it be like MMORPG!!!!11!
I don't know anything about FLASH yet I just downloaded it and want to work on my game!!! I don't know what I want to do who wants to HELP?!!

I stopped reading the game/AI forum because of these (I don't know if they've gotten better or worse lately). Now, I'm not saying you can't try to get a team together to work on a game - I've done it myself - but, lets be honest here, if you don't know anything about Flash yet, or have only done a few simple tutorials, you would be much better off working on some things on your own, first, before trying to recruit a group of people in a forum. A better way to acheive your goal would be to start out with learning how to do something simple, but similar to what you want your game to be - if you're working on a Platformer, start with the tutorials on the subject, and then make a few different test movies... using the forums to get as much info as you can, and then come back and say something like:

Hi everyone. I'm trying to get a group together to work on a game idea that I have. I was thinking of a Multiplayer-PLatformer, with cartoon-like characters, and lots of fun levels to play. I've already done some solo work on a very basic platformer [attachment 1], and I'm pretty good at making graphics, but I have some holes in my multiplayer knowledge, which is why I'm hoping to find a few other people to help me out (plus, I'm swamped with work/school/women, so I can't work on it all the time). If anyone's interested, please contact me at: blah@blah.com

I'm sure everyone would agree that it would be much better to see more of this type of post... I don't think we can/should have it be one of the rules: "No teams!", because it would be impossible to police it, and I don't think we would want to stifle that type of person from getting a group together, but I think if the people who want to look for a team does something like this, they would get better results... Ironically, the people who post Example A are not the ones who will read this, so, I don't see it having any effect.... :P

  • Yeah

Good luck with that RPG tutorial, Tim. It's Coming along nicely.

    peace

  • It seems to me that people are not even coming close to following these rules...
Just today, I saw a new thread that was basically one guy posting new threads over, and over, with the same question.... and I see a lot of people posting questions in new threads that (to me) should really be attached to their last thread... this whole forum seems to be breaking down into a mass of chaos that makes it nearly impossible for anyone to really give any help, or seek any help...

...if only I was a mod, I could clean this place up... but People, PLEASE, you're only hurting yourself, and everyone else in this forum, when you don't adhere to the rules!!

Edit: And another thing, people really need to read the "Resource" section before posting, at the very least! I've looked at like 5 different threads today where the answer was simply: "Check out tonypa's tutorials [insert link here]"!

  • I have read and agree to the rules.

I won't post new threads without an .swf or some code!
    (I know how walls work)

  • Yes JoMan is right about lots of people asking for platform help, BUT a lot of the threads that I seen when i was beginning I couldnt make heads or tails from it because;
    i) They were not descriptive enough for beginners.
ii) They used words that begginers won't know.
iii)! The codes for them were all over the posts which were about 4-5 pages long!! gets very tedious after a while.

  • Also, can people not post for the sake of posting?

I guess it's ok if it's a one liner expressing your opinion (If the person has asked for it) but I find it irritating when people post off topic, or unhelpful messages just to get their posting numbers up...

  • Anyone else notice how many people are making RPG games, and wanting an entire team to join them and they have no experience in flash or very little.

//edit, and i've kept myself from posting this for a little white till i saw the latest threads.

    I certainly did notice this...

  • these are cool rules

  • Anyways, another rule would be...newbs, don't ask questions on RPGs
Or Platformers. I've written two platformers, and not that I'm complaining about writing tutorials, (I love writing them) but I have seen so many lazy people! Right after I write one, 4 or 5 threads, asking about the same thing, pop up :bored:. there is a button called 'search' (or rather, looking at the first page).
