how do I fix Outlook 2003 to display a system tray notification icon
when an email arrives that a rule immediately moves into a folder
other than an inbox. Currently I come back to my PC to find a number
of emails have been received that have been sorted into various
subfolders, but no notification icon waiting for me because they
didn't arrive in the inbox.
Extra tip if you can work out how to get the parent folders to
highlight unread email without expanding to the subfolders within
which these emails are present. I can't believe I didn't know about it.
But there I was right-clicking on something ELSE, missed, and saw the

topbanana:
There are people who would kill NOT to have the system tray icon
notification when they receive certain mails that are processed by
rules. So, basically, either your IT has disabled this with (I
believe) some 3rd party application, or your Outlook installation
needs repair. Have you tried Detect and Repair from the help menu?
Also, highlighting the parent folders really isn't viable because it's
the number of unread messages that are highlighted. Since those
numbers are WITH THE FOLDER IN WHICH THEY RESIDE, they cannot also be
with the parent folder.
You might want to try www.slipstick.com for 3rd-party applications
that could do something like that for you, though I have never heard
of one specifically. The Outlook object model is, from what I
understand, not very well understood, and there's just not a lot of
programmers out there. I am lucky enough to know a coder who can do
anything, but he's so busy...
