Good question. I've never thought of love as freedom or captivity. If I had to pick, I would have to say that love is more like captivity. That doesn't mean it is ipso facto negative. We all desire love, to be loved and to love, but when we love we are compelled, motivated, and driven to act on that love. Ultimate the concept of choice degrades to mere theory, but still there are forces acting upon us when we love that do not act upon us when we do not love. (In thereory we are always free to do or not to do something) In this restricted sense, I say love lessens freedom. When we are loved it can a source of pleasure or of displeasure. Again, we have variables at play on us, effecting us, that otherwise wouldn't influence us. So, either way I would say love is not freedom...or at least love lessens freedom.

I see your point regarding the last two lines in regard to freedom. You have to understand that it depends solely on ones view of death. If we believe death is the end, it would seem pointless to love. If we believe God has a place for us as promised, it would be very freeing. Regardless, I think "love is freedom" means we have the right to love as a part of our free will. That should take some of the confusion away. I hope. Love, Ivy

What on Earth makes you think that love is freedom? Love is giving yourself to another. Love is caring enough about another person to take care of them. Love is a compromise. Love is hard work--it's hard to keep it alive. Love is anything but freedom!
The love is freedom, where there is not freedom there is not love.

Sometimes, love is a prison
The way I reckon it, love isn't freedom, but love is what freedom is all about. Without love there wouldn't be any freedom. But without freedom there wouldn't be the experience of love either (love's diverse manifestations). Ultimately, the nature of the divine, the immanence of God in nature, exists because the nature of the divine, the transcending nature of Love, exists.
How is love freedom? Love resides under a category, we base categories on things that we know. Love is the farthest away from freedom. Better yet, love does not exist,nor has it ever. It's a romantic notion to think that it has, but in all reality the concept of love is just some chef adding flavor to a soup that he/she believes needs something more, but in reality only making the soup taste terrible.
