Robot Wars: Bringing technology to the point of self awareness?
Published by: jack 2010-03-18

  • This has long been a topic of discussion amongst science fiction enthusiasts, but I want your opinion.

1.) Do you think it is possible to bring technology to self-awareness?

2.) Do you think such a thing would be dangerous? Why or why not?

3.) If the newly formed robotic sentient beings were to attempt to overthrow humanity, who would win?

4.) Would this be considered successfully creating life. If not, what would?

  • here's my thought... if robots become "self aware" they'll notice that we are using them and that they can be replaced... sorta like slavery. they'll then become rebellious and for certain they'll win a war against humans. we have given them all or information even the most top secret. (computers) if in some way they can share this info with each other we humans have no chance they are stronger and don't need much maintiance unlike us.. we need robots and robots need us i believe there is going to be a point in which we'll be balanced with robots a maybe even become bionic.. that will be so cool but that is just opinion

  • 1) I'm skeptical, but not certain. It's certainly popular to say that A.I is inevitable, but just as many scientists are unconvinced. Roger Penrose, one of the world's preeminent physicists, believes that A.I is impossible and wrote a hugely influential book on the matter (The Emperor's New Mind). I've also heard the quest for A.I refered to as the quest for "the ultimate girlfriend builder" and the technological singularity refered to as "The rapture for nerds", so like any science, we have to approach it with a skeptical, but open, mind.

    2) If it is possible, I very highly doubt it. If we make them, they will be made in our image, and that means that they will have the same capacity for love and kindness as we do, and will desire war as much as we, in this age of peace, do.

    3) Again, assuming Robots become more powerful than us. Do we humans try to destroy nature simply by virtue of its position under us? Or do we try to preserve it, study it, and integrate ourselves within it? It isn't the military that is on the cutting edge of A.I development, it is peaceful scientists pursuing knoweldge who are.

    4) Are viruses life? Are mathematical algorithms life? Are the citizens of my Simcity 2000 city life? Until we get a solid definition of life (something that I personally do not have the hubris to believe that I do), we won't really be certain.

Being in the technology business - this is so important for all of us to manage. I would say Self-awareness is a must. Is it a trait or skill? I dunno.

  • Define self awareness.... What makes a being self aware? Are you self aware? Is an ant? They already have computers that can fix them selves, and that can reproduce themselves. Are they self aware?

Like anything else we do, it all depends on how you use that self aware computer. (Assuming it is self aware.) Since the only moral code it can have must be learned from humans... it can be used to heal, as a guiding hand to a laser scalpel, or to kill, as the guiding hand to a missile.

Fewer numbers, a lack of resources and one other thing would doom the robots. No robot ever built can make the sheer destructive abilities of a human. We are far better at destroying thing than any logical being could ever be.

Define life. If self awareness is needed for life, and I don't think it is, then it would be, but life is a bit more than that.
