Security Death Index which lists many (if not most) people whose
Social Security records indicate a death. Anyone can access it and
search for people to see if they are listed among the deceased

Searching for CARLETON DEVINE the only result that returns is CARLETON
M. DEVINE leading me to believe that with the unusual spelling of the
first name, the matching middle initial and the approximate date of
birth (age) you recall that it is fairly probable this is the same
individual, especially if the other information seems to match what
you might remember:

LAST LOCATION OF RESIDENCE: Moorestown, Burlington [County], NJ
His social security number was issued to him by the state of
Massachusetts, which very well might have been his place of birth, if
