I may be missing something here but you can buy blackwater extract to add to a tank. You are looking for soft water with a pH of about 6. You can make DIY blackwater extract by boiling down oakleaves once they have gone brown - but it sounds like a lot of effort for something you can buy quite easily

A piece of mopani wood or drift wood will stain the water tea colored.
I had a tank like this by accident and ended up liking it. (personal choice)
The tannins in the water are totally harmless to everything, Fish love it because the water is a touch softer but more because its darker hence safer feeling.
Fish are naturally used to dark water from organices in streams.

Just build the tank the way you like and ask which wood will really stain the water.
Using chemicals is never good...as fluacting pH kills fish dead.
Good news by using wood after a year the tannins will have all leached out and your back to normal.
Or just take the wood out and slow boil a couple hours and reinsert.
becareful with live plants as the tannins do block alot of light.
