Peacock, the national bird, is listed in Schedule I of endangered species.
Dr Sandeep Jain, State Honorary Wildlife Warden, visited the spot on getting the information. He told Newsline, “Today morning Forest Guard Jasvir Singh, posted at Laddowal Forest, found two dead of peacocks in the forest around Satluj river. He informed his senior officials and animal welfare activists. On further search, 11 of these birds were found dead, including nine peahens.
They were brought to Government Veterinary Dispensary at Haibowal.”
Dr JK Uppal, Senior Veterinary Officer at the dispensary, added that since it was a case of the death of a wild animal and that too of endangered species, they sent the bodies to Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RDDL) at Jalandhar. No outbreak of bird flu, says Centre
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The Centre on Friday denied reports of outbreak of avian flu in the country after 11 peacocks were reported dead in Ladhowal forest near Ludhiana in Punjab.
“No outbreak of the disease is reported in the country after the last incidence in Chingmeirong village in East Imphal district in Manipur on July 25, 2007. India has achieved freedom from the disease on November 7, 2007,” said the Department of Animal Husbandry here.
Clarifying that the peacock deaths were not due to avian influenza, the department said the samples were sent to the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory at Bhopal. “The laboratory has indicated that the samples collected are negative.”
