All of a sudden my Eudora now displays all email messages and from and
subject lines in italics. Also IE displays text in italics also.
When I type in a search in google the results are all italics...help!
There is not setting that I can find in either program...this is an XP
Pro problem.

I also just realized that somehow all my outlook express emails have
disappeared. I have not used express in a while, but just logged into
look. I had norton installed but it would not open for some reason (
virus related) and I couldn't uninstall or reinstall...so my virus
checking abilities over the last day have been limited. So I need
some immediate assistance about what to do to fix these itallic
settings. I owuld like the get my emails back...but for the time
being I am just happy to get Eudora back to normal..and IE.

I tried your suggestions...but no luck...the online virus checker is
down...and the other thing didn't work.
There are many possibilities, and it may not necessarily be caused by
a virus. Perhaps some files where corrupted.
Since you are using WinXP, try to use System Restore and see if it
helps. You only need to select the correct restore point prior to the
occurence of your problem.

I would recommend that you first point your browser to
Trend Micro's free online virus scanning service:
http://housecall.antivirus.com/
If a virus is found and destroyed, and that fixes your displays,
all is well. If a virus is found, and the online service is
unable to remove it, simply download their free 30-day trial
AV program, PC-cillin:
http://www.trendmicro.com/en/products/desktop/pc-cillin/evaluate/trial.htm
You can then destroy the virus, or quarantine it for removal.
If IE is still showing italics at that point, try what worked
for this poster on this newsgroup:

I really think it is a virus...it is too much of a coincidence that
norton, ie and eudora would all be acting funny.

I don't have Windows XP, but in Windows 95, a lot of programs get their
settings from Internet Explorer's Internet Options. Perhaps something has
changed the font settings in Internet Explorer and it is affecting the
other programs. This link may be helpful:

I just downloaded it...but it doesn't seem to do anything. No changes are visible.

nope...and as I said before this is happenning in IE and Eudora..and
there is no setting in either program to make italics the primary
style
When I check out the fonts folder and double click neither tahoma or
arial is in italics...however I started using PC Cillin and it
attaches a not to the file that I can get access to when I right click
and choose properties. It says that some of my fonts are not there or
I don't have permission to access them. However they are only
protected by the archive box...not the read or write only boxes?

Could you please answer the following questions for me:
1) Have you done anything with desktop themes lately?
For the next two questions, you will need to poke around a little bit
on your system. I only have access to a Windows 98 computer right
now, so I hope that my instructions will still work on your Windows XP
system.
2) Go to the Control Panel and open up the Fonts folder. Double click
on Arial to see the font preview. Does the font appear normal or in
italics? If it is in italics, then your Arial font has been corrupted
somehow, and you need to re-install it. Let me know if this is the
case, and I will provide instructions on how to re-install the font.
3) Go to the Control Panel, double-click on Display, and click on the
Appearance tab. Under the 'Item' drop-down list, go through all of
the selections. Are any of these selections set to an italicized
font?

Do you have TweakUI installed? It is a Power Toy for Windows,
and has a 'Repair' tab which offers the option to rebuild the
Fonts folder.

Nope no luck....it found a couple "bugs"...but the italics are still
in full effect.
