This would be great as it would force an upgrade to some of the lousy stadiums.
If either Italy or Greece wins this bid I'm there. Would love to go back to Italy (and probably will at least once between now and 2012) but want to make it to Greece too. So either way is a win-win for me.
I already intend to be in S. Africa for the 2010 WC. I happen to have a friend who owns an apartment on the ocean in Durban and he has offered to have me and the wife stay there. Yes, life is good...
Confirmation in this article from the FIGC that Italy will pursue the bid:

.
Will you be mad if I give you positive rep point for this? :)
Another excuse to visit Italy in 8 years; I'd better start relearning all the Italian I've forgotten over the past 15 years.
Looks like Greece is readying a bid. I haven't heard anything else about Italy's plans, but according to this article, candidacies must be formalized by Dec 16 (next month), with the final 3 being determined Nov 10 2005 and the host country announced on Dec 15 2006.
Greece failed in a bid to host Euro2008 (which will be hosted jointly by Austria and Switzerland), but the recent success of the Olympics as well as winning Euro2004 would probably help them be the early favorites for 2012.

Of course not! :)

Totally agreed. Maybe they can build soccer specific stadiums especially in Rome.
Right. Not only the last batch of U-21s who just won the European championship and Olympic bronze medal this summer, but also the current U-21s, who have started qualifying for the 2006 European championship with a 100% record after 3 games. Many of them played on the team that won the U-19 European title in 2003 while last year's U-19s have qualified for the FIFA World Youth Championships next summer. It has the potential to be a great era, and it'd be nice to host a tournament 8 years from now when these guys are in their primes.
Austria/Switzerland are hosting jointly.
Not forgotten! Not sure if hosting a FIFA event 22 years prior would play into UEFA's decision or not. There are certainly cases of a nation hosting both events within two decades. Italy '80 and '90, of course. Also, France '84 and '98, and Germany '74 and '88.
Still, I have to think Greece would be the favorite to win the bid since they have never hosted either event and just put on a successful Olympics.

Article from uefa.com:-

with this calendar of dates:
Dec 16, 2004 - UEFA begins accepting formal bids
Jan 31, 2005 - deadline for associations to inform UEFA of their interest
July 21, 2005 - deadline for bid dossiers to be submitted
November 2005 - UEFA announces shortlist of no more than 3 finalists
December 2006 - UEFA announces winning bidder
this would be great for Italy and the stadiums especially, maybe they can modernize the Olimipico in Rome a bit.
this promising generation of u-21s would in theory be in their prime to play as the host team for the event in 2012...
long time away.
looks like France is in the competition for the 2012 Euros:

I would agree with Sue that Greece has momentum to win this bid..
Dont foget they hosted World Cup 90
You'll be surprised how fast time starts go by as you get older. :)
The selection of the host country will be made, I think, in 2006, so stadium upgrades could start soon after that, if they manage to win the bid. Italy last hosted the European championships in 1980, so it's been a while.

I really don't care where the Euro is hosted.
I only care how successfully the host nation host the event
who will host in '08?

As soon as I saw this thread I started thinking exactly the same thing...
