as with every post, i have to say fantastic job on xbmc. i've been a big fan for quite a while.
my questions revolve around connecting xbmc to shared itunes playlists. i know there are some issues with itunes, but creating playlists in one place for my ipod and connecting xbmc to it is just too easy to ignore. i've searched the forums and the manual, but just can't seem to find an answer.
1. i can connect xbmc to itunes and play music. i can scan the songs into my database play them from there as well. i can even use party mode and that works great. the problem comes in when i reboot my box and then try to run the party mode again. it just sits there and doesn't do anything. i found that if i cleaned the database, scanned the playlist again it would work again. just recently, i discovered that if i file browse to my itunes again, play a song from the playlist, switch back to the library view and then run party mode it would work again. obviously its a work around, but i was wondering if anyone else has different solution.
2. my second question is about using the party mode with certain playlists. so far, it seems that i can only get it to work with the entire music database. is it possible to only party mode certain playlists? or better yet, party mode an itunes playlist? no, it doesn't update as new songs are added. i imagine it's possible to write a script that would keep the m3u playlist in sync with your itunes playlist. again, beyond my knowledge.
i connect to my itunes library via daap. is there a way to connect to the itunes playlists via samba?
when you say you're connecting to your itunes, do you mean you're connecting to your itunes music folder via samba, or you're connecting to a shared itunes library via daap?
well, indirectly you can. you can use the "export as song list" from itunes and use a little utility found here (http://chimpen.com/itunes2m3u/convert.php)
to convert that song list to an m3u file that xbmc can read.
you would then need to add a path substitution in your advancedsettings.xml to tell your xbox to look at the samba share instead of the path referenced in the playlist. (playlists need to reside on the server machine for this to work.)
whew, that's a lot of work to get to a similar place.
in a perfect world, xbmc would not only read itunes playlists, but dynamically update them so that whether i play a song on my ipod, computer, or xbox, my play count and "last played" info is updated. i rely very heavily on this info in itunes to create smart playlists. i know i'm dreaming, though.
don't know about your scenario, though. i've never actually scanned my itunes playlists to the music database via daap.
regarding "party mode" for individual playlists, couldn't you just enable "shuffle" on a particular playlist to get the same result?
just an update. i figured out the solution. i feel like a such a tool, but you simply have to queue the itunes playlist and then make sure the system is set to shuffle on load. pretty easy, i can't believe i didn't think of that first. oh well.
again, great work on the system guys. keep it up.
i've actually thought about what your describing, but like you said its a lot of work. i was hoping for something dynamic. so as i make changes to a playlist in my itunes, i could have the xbox updated as well. i'm guessing the ability just isn't there.
i could make a playlist of the songs in the itunes playlist, but i would have to update it every time i make a change. not the end of the world, but still work. correct me if i'm wrong, but the only way to add a song to a playlist is with the y button, correct? is there a way to add all the songs you're currently viewing to a playlist?
yes, you would need to update the playlists regularly. in my case i have a "favorites" playlist in itunes that have set up to:
include any song with 4-5 stars
exclude any song played within the last month
limit to 200 songs by random
for xbmc purposes, i changed the playlist to just include all of my 4-5 star rated songs with no limitations. this way i don't have to update, and just deal with maybe hearing a song i've heard recently.
we need someone to build "itunes for xbmc" that reads and interacts with the itunes .xml and .itl database files. it would have to be someone much smarter than i, however!

are you using a smart playlist to do this? and does it auto update as you add new songs to itunes? what do you have to do on the xbmc side to get this to work?
i definitely agree about the itunes for xbmc. i'd love to be able to do it, but my programming skills are sorely lacking.
