Better songwriter: Dave Mustaine (never had an album that wasn't awesome).
Better guitarist: Are you kidding me? Dave Mustaine rules all. All Kirk Hammett does is play recycled Black Album riffs and basic bluesy E-A-based chords.
Better Singer: Sorry to say that James wins this one. Dave Mustaine was excellent until he released Youthanasia.

Better lyricist: It has the same meaning as songwriter! :S
Better band: MEGADETH! Metallica just sucked after their self-titled album. And Death Magnetic is probably the most overrated Metal album ever.

Better Personality: Dave Mustaine. He's not an ego-maniac and doesn't make fun of his nemises behind their back.
Better looks: Mustaine, hands down. Hetfield looks like a wild hog.

Too many variables.
First off I don't think it matters who has a better band, because that doesn't pertain to the individual (it's metallica by the way).
James Hetfield-- Better singer/songwriter/lyricist--no contest
However:
Dave Mustaine-- Better guitarist by a mile. In my opinion, he should have let someone else sing, and stuck to lead guitar if Megadeth were to be as successful as metallica.
