LDS: Can you tell me...?
Published by: jane 2009-01-07
  • ...which specific beliefs you have that CAN NOT change, under any circumstances?

If you don't believe the rest of it (the stuff that may or may not change later), can you still be a Mormon?

  • If you are mormon, and don't believe the things yourself, it's sort of like just wasting your time

  • If you go in for a temple recommend interview the first three questions will be

1-Do you believe in God the Eternal Father, His son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost?
2-Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the savior of the world?
3-Do you believe in the restoration of the gospel in these the latter days and sustain the prophet President Thomas S. Monson as prophet seer and revelator and the only man on the earth with the keys to lead Christ's church on the earth?

That's for a temple recommend interview and it gets easier from there, but if your struggling with the doctrines of the church it's pretty hard to get kicked out of the church.

  • To list them all would be difficult because one leads to another.
At the base of it all though for me is that Jesus Christ the son of the living God offered himself as a ransom for my sins. That by and through him I can return to live with my Heavenly Father and praise the name of Christ forever for his willing sacrifice for me. That through him I am redeemed from my sins and forgiven as I turn my heart to him.
  • What can you possibly tell me about the Christian religion of Mormonism?::

  • I'm Mormon, but one of the reasons I became one was the "Cafeteria Christians" I knew in the Baptist and Pentecostal services I attended.
They would pick and choose which doctrines to believe and what Christian tenets to follow.

You could ask this question of any devout member of any faith and they will say that the parts of their Articles/Declarations of Faith are the most unchangeable. Anything else will be subject to acceptance by the individual, but it's hard to reconcile picking and choosing with what is taught in all churches.

  • What beliefs that CAN NOT change?

That Jesus is the Christ. That God is our Heavenly Father. The gift of hte HOly Ghost. That the Bible and the Book of Mormon are the word of God. That Joseph Smtih was the first prophet of this dispensation.

  • There are some things that are eternal truths. Other things that are customs or practices. My guess is that you don't put the blood of your first-born animal on your doorpost even though those in the Old Testament did.

Regarding eternal truths, here are a few that come to mind. (although we may receive more light and understanding, but nothing that will be conflicting or contradictory)

    The nature of God
    The plan of Salvation
    The Priesthood

Our 9th article of faith reads:
We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

We are not shy about acknowledging that certain things will change. If nothing else, that is biblical.

  • Beliefs w have that cannot or will not change (I am unaware of any beliefs that HAVE changed... but whatver.)

    Not change:
    Christ is the Savior
    God is our Father
    Christ is God's Son
The Godhead has three members: God, Christ and the Holy Ghost
The Bible and Book of Mormon are scripture, as well as Doctrine & Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price
Joseph Smith is the prophet of the Restoration
    The Plan of Salvation
    We pre-existed

That's all I can think of, off the top of my head... I am not sure what beliefs you think have changed or will change?

  • you have to learn the pantie chant

  • Well I cant change any of my beliefs. But to be a Mormon in the true sense you know that Joseph Smith was a prophet, that we have a prophet today, that church is true and that the Book of Mormon is the word of God along with the bible.

If there is 1 thing we believe in thats not true then the all of it would be wrong. But the thing is - everything is true. Is there something specific you are having trouble with?

  • Few doctrines and most principles.

  • How anyone can believe the book of mormon is anything other than complete fabrication -- since there is NO archeological evidence to support its story of any kind -- is beyond my ability to understand.

All religions are delusional belief systems...the mormons are just more delusional than average, that's all.

    Peace.
