Published by: admin 2009-01-07

  • Nice to see the old man still has a chance to shine for the Azzuri.

  • Actually, he didn't play vs Austria or the USA. He started vs Czechoslovakia and then Uruguay and Ireland. But he only came on as a sub vs Argentina, for some strange reason. Then he started vs England in the 3rd-place match.

  • baggio started EVERY game in 94, he was the in fact the biggest reason that italy got to the finals. He also started every match in the WC 90.
Actually, Baggio didn't start every game in 1990...unfortunately for us.

  • even if Baggio was still laying and scored 35 goals in a season Lippi wouldn't call him becasue Lippi hates Baggio. He kicked him out of Juventus and Inter.

  • if zola can get called up, let's bring up Baggio as well,
and i don't care that he retired, he can still play world class football.
zola is way too old. lippi must be mad

  • Baggio started every game in WC 1994 ...

  • who will be next, Battega Mazzola

    age does not matter,
if you play well at 38 then why not get called up? playing well at 38 v 28 is the same.

you sure he wasnt in the austria match? i could have sworn that he passed that long lob to schillaci for the only goal of the match.

  • which matches didnt he start? i know he played against austria and the czechs for sure

Baggio did not play in either of the first two games against Austria and the USA. He started game 3 against Czechoslovakia, and the second round and quarterfinal games against Uruguay and Ireland. Inexplicably, he was back on the bench for the semifinal against Argentina. He didn't come into that game until the 75th minute. That move possibly cost them the 1990 World Cup title.

  • well cant argue that, baggio was only a sub against argentina?
Yup. 1990 and 1998 are very similar for Baggio unfortunately. In 1990 Gianluca Vialli got injured and Baggio took advantage of this and was Italy's best player in the games he played. Then Vialli came back from injury and Baggio was back to the bench for the Argentina match. If Roby played Italy probably would have beat Argentina to advance to the final. Then in 1998 Del Piero got injured and Baggio again stepped up his game and formed a lethal partnership with Vieri. But Delboy came back from injury and Baggio was back to the bench for the France game, which of course they lost. So when you think about it in Baggio's three most important games for Italy he either didn't start(WC '90-Argentina, WC '98-France) or was hurt(WC '94-Brazil).

  • seems like all italian NT coachs hate or dislike baggio.
look at the 94 WC, he won the golden boot in 93 but didnt even start
and we all know Trap sure as hell did not like him.

  • It took a monumental act of hubris and stupidity not to call up Zola when he was the best player in England, but now Italy is considering calling him up? Unfreakingbelievable.

Well, he is playing in a real competition now . . .

    I crack myself up.
