We are getting married May 23, 2009.

  • You didn't mention a quantity... to be honest unless you keep it really small you're probably not going to find a traditional reception place for that price. Most reception places have a minimum you have to meet as far as food and drink are concerned and it's rarely below $2000. If they don't have a minimum then they charge a rental fee and that coupled with your food will bring you over $2000.

Not to discourage you, it can be done, you just need to think a little out of the box. Does anyone you know have a really nice yard?? What about an intimate outside ceremony (cheaper than a church ceremony normally) and then taking people who are close to you to a nice restaurant? Just start to think of possibilities and you'll find something you like that is in your budget.

For 50 people a restaurant could possibly work alright. You would need to clarify with the restaurant before hand about your costs on alcohol (if you're planning on providing any) but $35 a person will go further there than with a reception venue.

  • Start looking for really small halls. With some, you can get away with a buffet for that amount plus the hall rental. You won't have a lot of choices for food with that budget but I went to one that turned out nice. Lasagna, sliced roast beef, potatoes, salad, and rolls. The coffee and tea was included but not any other drinks. The dance floor was a little small but not too bad. Tables were long rectangles and the decorations had to be done by the bride and her family/friends.

They didn't want to spend a lot of money. The whole wedding cost $5,000 but it was still pretty elegant. Simple and elegant. And the DJ made all the difference. Everyone was up dancing and having fun. Plus, they gave the rest of the food to an orphanage down the road so that was nice too.

For how many people are you expecting? That info makes a huge difference.

  • That's going to be tough. For 50 people that only gives you $40 per person for food, not counting the ceremony part.

I suggest you look for a hall like a VFW or Elks lodge and do buffet-style catering with a local restaurant or deli or maybe even look into doing the food yourself through BJ's or Costco OR look into having the meal be lunch rather than dinner in order to save money.

$40 per person was the low-end of the price range when I was looking in Philly and Lancaster areas. If you go to a catering hall type place you will have to pay for the meal, the beverages, hors d'ourves, and don't forget the 18% or 20% gratuity that they tack onto the bill, too.

edit: I was thinking back and recalled a place near Lancaster that was pretty affordable. This may be totally outside your budget, but you *may* be able to work with their pricing. The location is adorable and you could have your wedding on-site:

I looked up the BBQ place on the catering list and they listed their price @ $24.95 per person. THAT is a good rate, but the rental fees might kill your budget of $2k.

This is another place that might be within budget - you would have to check fees beyond the food- , but its outside Philly near Lancaster, too: http://www.shady-maple.com/banquets
Their budget buffetts for a saturday start at $19.99 per person.
I've eaten at the buffet that this restaurant has and the food is outstanding!

  • Good luck! I got married in a small town in rural Minnesota and the cost of just renting the hall was $1,000 and with food and drinks the cost was probably around $3,500-4,000 and that was for about 60 people..

  • I live in the Philly area, and I'm in a similar situation (small wedding, low budget). What sort of site are you looking for (church, historic/scenic setting, banquet hall...)? Also, do you need something *in* the city, or are you willing to travel outside? If so, how far?

If you're looking for a religious/church setting, many of the churches in the area have function rooms in addition to chapels. I don't know what costs are in Center City, but outlying areas (like Germantown/Mt. Airy), you can get both rooms--or even a chapel & an outdoor space--for $1000-1500. Some will also allow you to bring in your own clergy or officiant.

If you're a member of a particular religion or denomination, start there. If you aren't, I recommend looking into one of the area's Unitarian Universalist congregations. UUs are interdenominational, open & welcoming to all backgrounds (faith or no faith). First Unitarian in Center City has a small, 50-person chapel for $350, and their function rooms are $500-600. The Unitarian Society of Germantown has a Sanctuary for $500, with function rooms at $400-500 (or outdoors for $150). You would need to speak to the venues about catering; many places will have contracted caterers that you must use (though there's often a range of options and prices. One way or another, you should be able to work something out within your budget).

Another option would be to look into gallery spaces. Friends of ours had their wedding & a cocktail reception at the Print Center. Rentals begin at $750; keep in mind that they do not allow dancing.

A place that caught my eye is the Fleisher Art Memorial. They rent their Sanctuary space & gallery for weddings, and the Sanctuary is only $550 for 3 hours. I don't think they have a contracted caterer, either, which gives you a lot of flexibility with food costs!

For a small wedding, you can always do a private party at a restaurant. If you have a favourite restaurant, inquire about their facility rentals or private rooms.
