Low blood pressure: cause and prevention

Published by: jack 2009-01-07
  • I am having a really bad day today. I am so tired I can hardly stand it. When I say I am tired, I mean I cannot even cope with driving on the freeway, for example. I was going out the door on my way to work and got terribly confused about things -- from the exhaustion. And I know I am not getting enough oxygen -- my breathing feels heavy and labored. (Breathing itself is not a problem.) A few months ago, I was diagnosed by my doctor with borderline low blood pressure and I am suffering terribly. She prescribed an herbal iron formula which I purchased from her in her office. It didn't help. If it goes any lower, I will need medication. My own Internet research finds no satisfactory answer as to the cause or what would help. I am 47 years old and otherwise healthy and always have been. Low cholestrol level, no diseases (other than osteoarthritis). Although my weight is within normal guidelines for my height, I feel I could stand to lose 25 pounds. My diet generally consists of fruit, vegetables, grains and one-a-day vitamin -- although this has only been consistently the last two years. I am tired and feel lethargic all the time. I can only do some activity -- like cleaning house -- for 30 minutes each day. After that I am dizzy and tired. Resting for awhile doesn't help -- I just stay tired and faint. No amount of exercise helps -- I just stay tired. After working Monday through Friday, I have been staying in bed all day Saturday to rest. I used to swim almost every day. Now I am too tired. I am listing below some web sites I already looked at and my comments: http://dede.essortment.com/causeanemia_rwpr.htm Comment: I don't have any of the diseases listed, and the B12 in the herbal iron formula has not helped or changed the condition. http://www.healthevolution.com/Articles/Anemia.html Comment: I am not younger; I am menopausal. Yes, I know that salt intake helps boost the blood pressure. But guess what? Salt makes my knees swell, making it all but impossible to walk; when I don't eat the damn salt, my knees don't swell. Now let me give you the general disclaimer to save you the trouble: ***I am bearing in mind that Google Answers does not give professional medical advice. You simply gather information that is available over the web. I have and will continue to consult with my doctor before taking ANY medication.*** Here is what I want to know: Can you find other reasons for the low blood pressure? What tests, if any, for my heart, should I have? If my organs are slowly being depleted of oxygen on a daily basis, would the organs eventually fail and cause my death? Could the low blood pressure eventually cause my death in some other way? Does anyone ever recover from this? And what I really want to know is this: Are my years numbered? If so, I am wondering -- do I have five, ten fifteen years? Be brutally honest. My own gut feeling is that I don't have much longer. Have you ever heard people talking about somebody who passed away? The deceased never told anyone they were suffering. The people say, "She had to have known". I feel like that. Thank you. Cynthia

  • Cynthia, Have your physicians ruled out depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia? Low blood pressure, in and of itself, does not usually make a person feel the way you feel. My mother has had extremely low blood pressure all her life, and she is a cheerful, energetic person; she just has to be careful not to stand up too rapidly when she gets out of a chair or out of bed, lest she lose consciousness.

  • I had a check-up and the doctor said I am healthy. She listened to my heart and said it is beating correctly. We both agreed I should try getting some rest and I went on vacation for three weeks. That was three months ago and that did not help either. My face, fingers and toes often tingle from numbness -- I have to rub them vigorously to get the blood flowing.

  • From personal experience, add Leukemia to the list of things to rule out. hummer

  • Also have your physician rule out hypothyroidism. I was recently diagnosed with low thyroid and one of the symptoms can be low blood pressure. Here's a link you might want to check out. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000353.htm
