MAC application question
Published by: webmaster 2009-01-07

  • I am trying to open a file in my MAC with the extension .cgi (an appliance owner's manual). What application will open this file?

  • I opened SimpleText and then tried to open the file and all I got was gibberish. Am I doing something wrong?

  • Most likely what happened is that the web server ran a program to generate the manual for you to view. It is common for the URL to end in .cgi when this takes place. There is a way for the program to replace the .cgi extension with one that applies to the file you are downloading, but it appears that the programmer did not account for this. Most likely you downloaded the actual manual, but the extension is incorrect. Try changing the extension to .pdf and try opening it directly. If this doesn't work, try changing the extension to .doc and try opening it. I hope this helps. - jgarrigu-ga

  • hello bettymcm-ga you need to download the appliance owner's manual you are wishing to view, on a PC, and not a Mac to read it. Unfortunately with some websites there is a bug somewhere in the download code that allows a Mac to physically download the webservers script (the. cgi) that serves the download instead of the actual download manual itself, .PDF, .doc or whatever. (this bug might not happen with OS-X) By accessing the download link from a PC will let you download the relevant manual instead of the server's download script which would make quite an amusing, if confusing read for the instructions of your appliance. I hope that helps, regards lot-ga

  • hi bettymcm, This file extension is common in internet addresses. CGI (Common Gateway Interface) involves a method of transferring data from web pages to scripts running on a web server and back again. You should be able to open this file with the "Simpletext" application. I hope this helps

  • Hi there bettymcm. I would email the website owner, and explain that your Mac is not correctly downloading the manual. Ask them for a better link, or a better way of doing things. If they value their customers, they'll help you out with that! Good luck, --seizer-ga

  • I have gone to the GE website and have downloaded the manual. The filename is called "tswww.cgi" and it is 2.9MB in size. Is this the same .cgi file you are referring to??? On my Mac computer the file has an Acrobat PDF icon, (it has a red horizontal stripe going through it), which means it can be opened and read by the Acrobat Reader application. Do you have Acrobat Reader installed???

  • jackburton-ga. Thanks for sending the pdf file. That opened fine. I guess I learned from this that I'm always going to have to find a way around .cgi extensions.

  • Yes, I make and open PDFs all the time. If you can send to me by email in a PDF format, that would solve the immediate problem. My email: bettymcm@earthlink.net.

  • yes, that would explain the problem. If the file does not have the right icon (i.e. with the red stripe) then your computer doesnt recognise it as a file that can be opened with an application. On my computer, the refrigerator file is being recognised as a PDF document and can be opened properly. This file should be readable on PCs and Macs - the file extension (.cgi) doesnt seem to be the main issue in this case. There obviously seems to be a reason why you cant open the file and I can. I would be happy to send you this file via email.... But firstly, can you open other PDF files on your computer??? and do these other files have the red striped icon on them?? If the answer is YES then it seems that there is something wrong with the refrigerator file that you've downloaded. Perhaps you only downloaded part of it (?). If the answer is NO, then you may have a problem with the Acrobat Reader application, and you may have to re-install the program again. Let me know what you find, and then I'll advise you accordingly. Jack

  • Before I requested an answer to this problem, I had tried changing the extension to PDF but that did not work. What I'm trying to download is a manual for a refrigerator, General Electric model GTS181C. I thought a big co. like this would generate manuals readable by either a Mac or a PC. If you can download a Mac version, that would be great.

  • Yes, that's the correct file. I tried to open it from Acrobat Reader 4.0 and couldn't do it. I didn't see any red stripe that indicated PDF, only the .cgi.

  • If think the likely explanation of this problem is what my colleague, (jgarrigu), has commented about below. I doubt changing the extension of file will help, but try it it anyway. If all the suggestions posted here fail, I suggest you post another "clarification request" with details about where and how you got hold of this file. I presume it was downloaded from an internet site. If you give me the relevant details, I will look into it for you. I am also a Mac user too!! If you dont know these details, then let me know what this product is, and I will try and find out where you can download it again in a Mac-friendly format.

  • hi bettymcm, I have sent you the file, which I hope resolves your problem. ~ Jack
