Hello robyman,
The word "tally" originated in English circa 1440, though it goes back
in Anglo-Latin to 1189. Originally, it was a stick with notches used
for accounting. It developed the meaning "'a thing that matches
another'" by 1651, and the modern meaning of "'a total score'" by
1856.
