Former US presidents attending soldiers' funerals:: They also like to participate in events celebrating the troops or in memorial ceremonies commemorating Memorial Day, Veterans Day and various other http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=271680HOME | Just felt like starting a thread on this for, well, a lot of reasons. I'm sure that most of y'all don't really need reminding about what Memorial Day is, and what it means to a lot of us. I want to share with all of you what I've got planned for the weekend, and maybe see what all you folks have going on as well.
Tomorrow morning, I'm driving to Raleigh to meet up with a friend of mine named Tommy, aka yankee_gooner here on the BS boards. I just met him on the 7th when we got together in Raleigh to watch the CL final. He invited me, as a Marine, to speak to the class of 6th graders he teaches and share with them what Memorial Day means as well as answer a few questions about my experiences in Iraq.
Of course, I jumped all over the chance. I got a fresh haircut today, got my blues (with spanky-new SSgt chevrons) out of the cleaners today, and I snagged a buttload of stickers and posters from the recruiting office, as well as a USMC DVD with some good film clips - and even a couple of MREs. I'm stoked, and Tommy says his kids have been really looking forward to it. Jewish Holocaust:: Oct 18, 2003 From the United State Holocaust Memorial Museum Website: .. Tomorrow afternoon, I'm driving up to Washington, D.C. I only decided a few hours ago to do it, too.
I don't think I've talked to any of you about Staff Sergeant Anthony Goodwin (http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/algoodwin.htm). We met while he was training up my Company prior to deploying to Iraq, and his unit wound up shipping out about the same time as mine. There's a lot of backstory here, but long story short, he was a great Marine, someone that I really connected with both on and off duty, and he always put his men first before everything - even his life when it came to it.
Tony was a member of the Jacksonville, NC chapter of Rolling Thunder. (http://www.rollingthunder1.com/) He had a lot of really close friends in the group, and they stepped up to help out his family and kids after he was reported KIA. This weekend is the Rolling Thunder national Ride for Freedom, with riders from all over the US converging on D.C. for a weekend full of events.
This afternoon, I spoke with the Jacksonville chapter president and explained that I was a friend of Tony's. He invited me to join them in Washington on Saturday morning for a wreath-laying ceremony at the Viet Nam Memorial, and afterward a ride over to Arlington - just the local chapter guys - to visit Tony's gravesite. I just happened to be in a situation (physically, geographically, financially) where I can do this and make it happen.
It's gonna be a huge weekend for me, and I'm very relieved to find something fun and meaningful to do - *twice*. This in between and around taking care of a zoo of pets (including one badly hurt dog and "my" slightly ill cat) for my friends here in NC. Y'all might have guessed, I just LOVE animals, so that's just icing on the cake.
So... what are all you folks up to?
(PS - sorry for the long post, but I'm really relieved, happy, and dammit, I just feel like sharing!!!)
Good for you Jared. Sounds like fun. I love last minute road trips, and it sounds like you're gonna meet some great folks along the way.
good stuff. I was in DC over Memorial Day when I was in 8th grade and we got stuck across from the Smithonian (not sure which one, American History maybe) while Rolling Thunder came through.
I've got a wedding on sunday. I think I'm going to drink a few Manhattan's in honor of my Grandpa (his favorite drink). He fought in WWII at Anzio and was received the Purple Heart in southern France after Operation Dragoon. It was the Million Dollar wound because they shipped him home!
Well, the flag will be unfurled at the homestead this weekend for a start. Not too much military history in my family though. As most of us get to hang around the beach/pool/BBQ, etc. on Monday, there is a reason we continue to be able to do this. Cheers to Sarge and all his buddies.

The flag will definitely fly all weekend. I'm a little worried, as it is supposed to rain, and I know you're not supposed to have the flag out in the rain, and, the front porch light burnt out last night, so I don't know if Jon (landlord) will have replaced it yet. If not, then I can't leave it flying past sundown.
That is really great Jared. I'm no Marine, but a big "hoo-ra" to you and your pals!
