Hi,
I would like to know the minimal configuration for a server required to run vbulletin for a forum with 20,00,000+ posts and more then 5,00,000 threads.
I will be keeping search enabled and similar threads enabled.
Search will be opened to guests.
There shall be minimum of 50 users online on a 5 minutes cookie timeout.
Your suggestions will help me, find a good server configuration.
Thank You.
Is this forum live right now? Does it already have those stats?
no replies ? Please post your thoughts.
Please check the PM floris.
What number did are you trying to show there? Your decimal places seem to be a bit off.

All depends on how many simultaneous users based on a 900 secs cookie timeout. Without having more info rather than raw number of posts and threads is quite difficult to know how big and powerful needs to be your server platform. Please give more info regarding this.
At that stage, to keep search open, you would be looking at at least 2 servers if not more, to split web and database.
Thanks Erwin for reply,
setup is going to be too huge here.. let me see now. I will further post here.
2.000.000 posts in 500.000 threads ... that means an average of 4 posts/thread?
Strange :)

Hey eva,
Thanks a lot of your time. Kindly check the PM I have send you.
based on the amount of users online i would say a 2.4ghz cpu (dual) with about 2GB ram.
That is quite a challange and a task, a bit over my head. I hope George (eva2000) could look into it. Joomla Freelance Jobs and Projects - JoomLancers Marketplace:: Highest Bid: US$2 000,00. sorry for lateness, my pc hard drives died a few days ago been struggling to get as much data off them before they go to hardware heaven :(
as AlfonsoC said it depends on how many mysql and vB concurrent users you get, but going by 2+ million posts to guestimate the user count as based on how many 2-11 million post forums I've looked into or seen i would guestimate concurrency level of at least 250-450 vB users minimum and 350-650 vB users max over 900s cookie timeout.
I'd get at least
Dual Pentium 4 3.06 to 3.2ghz Xeons
2GB REG ECC DDRAM memory minimum
fast 15,000rpm SCSI disks
latest stable 2.6.x linux smp kernel
PHP 4.3.11
MySQL 4.0.24
eAccelerator
But it's all guestimate - rather shoot higher than forking out for hardware that is under powered.
