Most files sort of disappeared!?

Published by: rose 2009-01-07
  • I have a chipped xbox (xecuter2) with a 300Gb HDD running XBMC (2.0.1).

'All' of the data files on the F drive (e.g. f:/apps/*, f:emulators, f:/games, f:/music/*, f:/pictures/*, f:mystuff/*) have 'disappeared' so I am left with empty directories, except the f:/videos directory which still has all the files/directories except f:/videos/films/*.

The file manager says that the disk space is still being used by the 'missing' files.

I have checked the XBMC FAQs and Google, but cant find anyone else who has had the same problem.

Anyone have any ideas about what's going on and how I can fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA, Joe

  • Could be the cluster size issue. You need to format using 32k clusters in order to use partitions over 250GB. How did you format the drive initially?

  • First let me apologize for hijacking your thread beamma! Your post is the first i've found that is similar to my own problem! (Thanks!) Hopefully some responses will help you as well as me!

I've been a long time user of XBMC... about 4 years or so? I've got a TSOP flashed board and a 300 gig HDD that was setup/partitioned with Slayer's EvoX. Sadly, twice in the last two days, i've lost files from several directories.
Outlook ate my shortcuts! (Favorite folders and calendar ::
When I would add or remove a favorite folder, my changes would disappear the .. As a developer, I will typically read and write these sort of files in

The really odd thing is that the directories themselves still exist, but the files in them are complete gone! At first i thought my CuteFTP proggy was doing something funky, but then it doesn't make sense that only the files inside several directories suddenly went missing... So i disconnected my CuteFTP and then did a hard reboot of my xbox, ARRRRRRRG stuck at the X logo screen! I boot with my Slayer disk and the XBMC directory has been deleted as well?!??! WTF is going on here? ???

So i copy over the back-up of my XBMC and then successfully launch into XBMC again. But shockingly about 200 avi files are gone forever!

The next night i'm trying to put back (ftp) my favorite seasons of stuff i regularly watch and suddenly everything freezes up. As we all know, LAN hiccups with FTP transfers are still fairly regularly problems, so i reboot once to reset it all... unbelievable.... i'm stuck at the X logo again....

Yup, booting with Slayers confirms that my XBMC directory is again totally empty!!!

I've now downloaded and transfered over the latest 5-18 XBMC release, but have yet to figure out why my files are getting deleted? There is no way that i'm 'accidentally' doing this, as i never ever touch my XBMC folder while FTPing, i mostly just update the latest TV shows I like to watch. (I live in Japan.)

    Anyone? Please and thanks!

  • The reason the files dissappeard is because the file allocation table got over written by data from one of the extra files added and the reference to them has been removed/erased and thats why you can't see them or get to them even though the drive still says its full

  • It sounds like you are having corruption problems. You can not have a partion that is greater than 256gig with 16kb clusters. You can have up to 512gig with 32kb clusters. So you can consider all your missing files lost. Now get yourself a copy of xbox partioner and reformat your hard drive using 32kb clusters.

  • Thank you so much for the replies ShortySco and Jezz_X!!

    Much appreciated! :;):

I'll get a hold of xbox partitioner and post my results!

    Thanks!

  • Yes you both would seem to be having the 16/32kb cluster problem/mistake.......

It's a mistake i made (only the once!), it really hurt.... what you both describe is pretty much the same as my experience and of many others i've read about here, search the forum, loads of similar posts.

Basically, you're screwed and can't recover the lost files (AFAIK?) so get your remaining files backed up and reformat with xbpartitioner and 32kb clusters (an any partition exceeding 256gb, smaller ones are ok on 16kb)

beamma: although you have not used over 256gb, the partition itself (including free space is over) the limit.... at a guess... the data is not written sequentially and some data could be stored at the "end" of the drive even with pleanty of free space, i think it is when data is written beyond 256gb that problems start.

    Hope that helps...

    Shorty

P.S... When i backed up my remaining files, some turned out to be corrupted and failed during FTP transfer..... nightmare!

  • Thanks for the quick response guys.

FYI the storage info is as follows:
    C: 497MB of 499MB Free
    E: 2916MB of 4881MB Free
    F: 33700MB of 278487MB Free

So, I've not actually gone over the 256MB limit (used about 244MB) although its very close. Also, it has been working in this configuration for a while.
I dont know how it was formatted (a friend did the mod for me) but I'll find out if you think it will help.

I know I may have to face the fact that the files are gone but I liked to at least try to get them back. I was thinking of using r-linux (a PC tool that recovers files from linux disks). Do you think it would work?

    Cheers,
    Joe

  • Also... if you installed with slayers and used nothing else.... i think this indicates that indeed you have 16kb clusters.

    Shorty

  • Thank you again for the information!
I've reformatted with xbpartioner (a bit tricky to figure out, but it worked out fine).

I guess we'll see how it goes as this hdd gets more and more full again.

    Cheerz!
