MRSA Outbreak at Jersey Shore
HealthCheck Special Report

August 23, 2007 - It's been no day at the beach for the Cummings family this summer down at the shore. The antibiotic-resistant staph bacteria called MRSA has filled their Stone Harbor vacation with trips to the hospital, powerful medications, and pain.
Mom, Vicki, says: "When I got it, it was the worst pain I ever felt, worse than having my children." It all started in June. First, 12 year old Codi got what his family thought was a bug bite on his elbow. It became more painful and began to swell. At the hospital, doctors drained the infected site and gave the boy powerful antibiotics. Scott and Vicki Cummings believe Codi then passed the super bug to his 4 year old brother, just by putting the infected arm around the back of the little boy's neck. That infection proved the hardest to treat. Four year-old John Scott needed a small operation to drain the infected area on his neck; his father was there for the procedure, and says it was incredibly difficult to watch.
"Being a dad... I almost passed out during the surgical procedure. They made me sit down. And you have your child here, screaming."
Despite efforts to disinfect and sanitize the family's shore house, Vicki got MRSA next. She describes the infection this way:
"It was on the back of my legs upper, upper legs couldn't sit, couldn't walk, couldn't stand couldn't drive."
The Cummings had one more MRSA scare when their 15-year-old daughter developed a pimple on her leg, but it was treated quickly and went away. Scott Cummings hasn't gotten the super bug, but he's taking preventive medication and making sure all cuts and scrapes are covered. MRSA can get in through tiny breaks in the skin. The whole family has begun a vigilant routine of hand washing and sanitizing. Vicki says, during the family's repeated trips to the hospital, they were told this was a recurrent problem.
Action News contacted Cape Regional Medical Center, and learned 44 MRSA patients have been treated at this Cape May County hospital this summer. In all but two of those cases, the disease was contracted somewhere in the community.
Infectious disease experts say community acquired MRSA used to be most common among athletes... In prisons... And military barracks... Where people are gathered in very close quarters. But, according to Dr. Robert Bettiker of Temple University Hospital... that has changed. " Now, I'm seeing it in housewives who stay at home and raise their kids... Its sort of popping up everywhere now."
Dr. Robert Bettiker says our two best weapons are awareness and prevention. Realize that a swollen, red nodule that's painful to the touch may not be an insect bite. If it worsens, have your doctor check for MRSA. And realize that the bug can travel person to person... or on often-used things. Dr. Bettiker advises:
"You want to make sure your bathtubs and showers are very clean."
Dr. Bettiker suggests using bleach-based cleaners on bathroom and kitchen surfaces. Don't share clothes, towels, and other personal items. Tell your kids the same thing as they head back to school, with physical education classes and sports. If you go to the gym, make sure small cuts or scratches are covered. And after you workout, wash well with soap and water.
As the Cummings family knows... Once MRSA comes into your home, it is an unwelcome and dangerous guest that is very hard to eradicate.
