I would assume I could create as many shapes as I wanted in a mask layer. But, flash only seems to recognize the first shape I draw on the stage. WHy is that. I've tried grouping the shapes, joining them in a movie clip, but only the first shape drawn in the layer acts as the mask. How do I correctly use multiple shapes for a more complex mask? Draw all shapes on one layer and that should solve the problem. Or, draw your shapes on separate layers and cut/paste them to a single layer. I'd prefer the first method.
You also can't cascade masks. [Embed one mask inside another.] But you can embed .swf files into a scene and apply a layer mask to that.
you can use actionscript to have multiple items mask another -
for example: the item you want to mask, make sure thats a movieclip w/ a name. Then on a layer above, create another movie clip and add all the shapes you'd like within. Then on the frame above those two, simply add:
theMcNameYouWantToMask.setMask(yourMaskMovieClip);
