Instead of typing "example.com/forums" I want people to be able to just type "example.com" to get to my forum
Even if I type "example.com/forum" it gives me an error 404 message. I don't want people to have to type "example.com/forums"
What do I do to change this?
Move the files from inside the forums directory up one folder, into the main directory.
ok I'm a noob... where do i go to do this? Is this on SmartFTP? or somewhere within cPanel? I just got this up and running about 1 hr. ago and noticed this problem. I still don't even know who to backup my database which I need to learn soon as well.
When you go into FTP there should be several folders like public_ftp public_html, etc. If your forum currently resides under /public_html/forum, you should move all the contents of the forum folder to /public_html/
html/forums/ is how you have it
it sounds like you want it like so
html/
Unzip the vb install open the uploads folder and you want to put the includes and ect folders and files on the root directory of the server not inside a forums folder
I'm guessing you currently have it setup as: http://www.example.com/upload to get to your forums, is this correct?
ok i got it... thanks a lot guys and for being patient... i appreciate it
so you want me to drag the upload folder again even though I've already done this and put it in public_html and done the whole installation process?
and put it where? the root directory? where is this? still not understanding... what folder do I put it in? or drop it on my ftp."example".com (ftp://ftp.%22example%22.com) thingy?
Connect with SmartFTP ..
Click on your domain name ,,
Then Click HTML ,,,
This is the root , YOu have a Folder here called Forums Delete it
Where you have the forums folder is where the contents of the forums folder should be
Don't delete your forums. That's stupid. You'll have to upload everything again.
Go into smart FTP, and go into forums. check or highlight or whatever everything in there, and move it up one directory.

added this as I know how annoying it can be to search for something and just get questions (more for in a few months when this post archives).

ya still having problems... shouldn't .com .com/forum .com/forums and .com/forums/admincp work as well? because i can't get into my admincp now
If you moved everything correctly, your AdminCP will be at http://www.example.com/admincp/index.php, assuming you kept the default admincp directory name.
And don't forget to change example.com to your site. :p

ok so i want my site to be able to be example.com and example.com/forums as if someone was to type example.com and basically have example.com/forums show up in the URL
right now it's can only be example.com because i took every individual folder out of the forums folder and put it in public_html
I'm guessing you currently have it setup as: http://www.example.com/upload to get to your forums, is this correct?
no it's setup as... http://www.example.com/forum

move it to the folder above? which is called public_ftp or actually put the entire folder in ftp.example.com
No problem. We all have to learn things before we're good at them. =]
