i had observed that it's been 2 days that my GP is coughing or choking. she's still active though doing popcorning and running but at times she coughs. when i bathe her a while ago i hear a litte gargling sound when she breathes. I think my Guinea Pig is sick? My guinea pig cinnamon is making :: Im not a vet, but when youre unsure about your pets health you should go to the vet because it could be serious. Also, just to see if the vet knows what is wrong http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070519051740AAp5yNuHOME |
what could this be?
TAKE HER TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY. Guinea pigs are prone to respiratory infections, and yours has all the signs of one. If you treat it quickly there is a good chance you can help her recover, but if you don't act now she WILL die.
Take the poor thing to the vet. She's probably caught a cold. The vet can help you. GAWD! Why didn't you THINK of that yet, dummy? (Jk, jk, jk, jk!)
Get her to a vet asap
She could be allergic to the soap or the cleaner stuff you use. The water may be to hot or freezing cold! Make sure you have it medium (hottish coldish.) If that's not the case bring her down to the vet and ask what's happening.
gargling means u might have gotten water in her mouth... try not to get the head wet when u bathe them. if u are using pine shavings, it could get into her lungs making her cough/sneeze a lot. i suggest use something that says "dust free" hope this helped!
Sounds like a respiratory infection, she needs to see a vet or else you may lose your little girl. Illness does not miraculously get better, it worsens until there is nothing left to infect. My guinea pig needs to cut her nails how? My guinea pig is not friends :: My vet does it for free cause I have pets who are current clients. You can cause tremendous damage to their feet if their nails are clipped too short. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071018061206AA91vAxHOME | (TLZ) Futurama Madhouse > Fan Fiction > In A Pigs Fry:: Meanwhile the guinea pig had squatted on the table, then taken a few steps and deposited him, coughing up gobs of greenish clone-o-goo and the occasional chunk http://www.futurama-madhouse.com.ar/fanfic/0rl05inapigsfry.shtmlHOME |
Obviously, she has a respiratory infection. Get her to a small-animal vet for some antibiotics.
Occasional guinea pig coughing (sounds like a hacking up or choking noise) is normal. Guinea pigs are not able to vomit, so when they eat to fast, they instead hack their food back up.
However, if it is suddenly happening more than usual, I would consider it as a URI. URI is the leading cause of death in guinea pigs. Rodents are prey animals in the wild, so they are pretty darn good at hiding their illnesses. That explains why she still looks active and what not, even though she may be sick. Get her to the vet before she gets even sicker! It's good you noticed signs this early, before it gets to the point where her activity goes down.
I will provide you with a link from guinealynx.com. It will explain more in depth about URI.

A vet will prescribe a safe antibiotic like Bactrim or Doxycycline to treat these bacterial infections. I will also give you the list you can print out and take along with you, to make sure your vet does not prescribe any deadly antibiotics! If your vet tries to prescribe any of these antibiotics, it tells you he isn't cavy-savvy enough and you need to find another vet.
