NA traffic after sharing connection

  • I've been getting tons of n/a process connections both allowed and blocked, and when I setup the attack detection to block them, I lost my whole internet connection.

Oddly, I am not using any P2P programs, and since the attacks would not stop, I formatted my PC thinking there must be a virus/spyware/etc. on my HDD. After I installed all the drivers, windows updates and Outpost, AVG with my ethernet cable unplugged (had downloaded all the updates/programs from work and burned them to DVD), the n/a process to the same IP started asking for connections again. I did a WhoIs on the IP and it turns out to point to my ISPs servers, but they have no idea what it is. This n/a process is constantly sending data IN to my PC on all kinds of ports, from the BOOTPC port being Allowed for DHCP, to piggybacking on any network enabled app I open, like FireFox. As soon as that starts to happen, my PC starts to crash and burn.

I know it's not the PC cause it didn't start until I shared my Internet connection with my neighbor via wireless. My guess is something logged my IP from sites he was at cause his PC went down first. I immediately disabled WiFi on my router so my neighbor could never do that again. Since then (about 3 months ago), I've had to format at least 3 times a month, trying everything I can to stop these attacks. This last time I formatted, I ran the PC for about a week with no internet and had not a single error. As soon as I connected to the web, I started getting attacks logged and had to format in about 10 hours.

I asked my ISP to change my IP and they keep saying they have no control and that DHCP will change it, but the stupid IP hasn't changed in 3 months. Now if I wanted to have a static IP, they would charge me extra, but me asking to have it changed, they tell me unplug your modem when the DHCP lease is gonna expire, and you MIGHT get a new IP leased. Well, for the past 3 months, I've watched my DHCP lease times and kept my modem off for up to a week hoping someone else would inherit that horrible IP, but to no avail.

Any idea on an approach I can take for this, cause I'm getting real sick of installing Windows XP, All my system drivers, SP2 and ALL those beautiful security update for XP every week now. Outpost seems to keep the attacks out for a while, but eventually something gets in and slowly poisons the entire system

If there was some way for me to stop certain events for all n/a processes that might help, but whatever keeps attacking my PC seems to learn new ways to **** on me every time I try something to stop it.

    Thanks,

    -Merk

  • Mercaba, can you post some of the log entries for the ALLOWED n/a inbound traffic and also the few entries immediately before the n/a entries. I would not worry about the BLOCKED traffic as this simply means Outpost is doing it's job.

As for the ip address renewal problem, I would recommend getting a static IP or moving to another ISP - both of which will give you a new IP address. Although, there is no guarantee that the new address will not also have similar traffic problems.
