I need to compare and contrast wireless RF and cellular technology. I
am deploying a pocket pc application which requires wireless access.
Cellular is rather slow and I need to undertand if RF is better,
worse, and what the disadvanages of that transmission method are. Wireless : Headphones - BestBuy:: with televisions and hi-fi stereo systems; wireless RF transmission; detailed Need help? Any application you design will need strict modulation controls and
utilze common packet switching and routing techniques. You will get
better bandwidth from RF but you will also pay more.

An interesting read on how do deliver RF bandwidth using existing
heating ducts in a large office building or school campus.

This company uses wireless RF to do advanced bar-code scanning and
tracking.

""Common Applications
RFDC is the communications technology of choice for manufacturing,
warehousing, distribution, and logistics management, where it is used
(most often with bar code scanning) to direct receiving, storage,
retrieval, physical inventories, order picking, pick-slot
replenishment, shipping, tracking returns, labeling, and other
applications. RFDC is also used on the factory floor for such
applications as work-in-process tracking, and labeling; and in
hospitals for tracking pharmaceuticals and medical supplies. On the
retail side, RF terminals are increasingly used for price
verification, order entry at POS, and direct store delivery.
Wide-area radio networks are used in transportation for fleet
dispatch, and in field applications such as sales, servicing, and
public safety where interactive communications with the host computer
are a priority.""

Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD)
":Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) is a technology standard
sponsored by the regional bell operating companies and McCaw Cellular.
CDPD was introduced by IBM, overlays packet switching onto the
existing cellular voice network, and transmits data packet s over the
idle capacity. This packet overlay is based on transmission control
protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP) and does not need the call setup
procedures required for switched voice calls. This makes CDPD ideal
for short bursty message applications such as point-of-sale (POS)
credit card verification, vehicle dispatch, package tracking and
e-mail (Gareiss, 1995).""
The same page also discusses cellular competition
""Competing Wireless Communications Technologies
The advancement of radio technology has resulted in the development
and deployment of many forms of wireless communication systems. The
most formidable competitors of cellular communications are personal
communications systems (PCS), cordless telephones , paging,
specialized mobile radio (SMR) and satellite communication (Perry,
1993).""
Depending on the application you plan to roll out and how much
bandwidth is necessary to make it a success...you may want to consider
sticking with already built infrastructure that will be easy to
incorporate your software into.
- it's a start anyway...some researcher can finish it..i gotta go get
some work done.
:)
