New Antibiotics

  • Where do you find information on ongoing clinical trials (both animal and human) for new antibiotics?

  • Hello rosemary25, And thank you for your question. I searched for antibitoic clinical tests and found many hits, over 60,000 as a matter of fact, but mainly individual university or clinic listings rather than a compilation. One good site, however is the NIH - National Institute of Health Clinical Alerts and Advisories at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/databases/alerts/clinical_alerts.html . An example of the the individual listing I found include Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters at http://www.chkd.org/about_us/cpr_clinicaltrialsunit_currenttrials.asp which lists Research Programs at the CPR / Current Clinical Trials - September 2002 complete with contact information for each program. There are many like this in my search results and a search like this might be helpful for you. I continued to look for a broader listing source. I tried refining my search to "new antibiotic" clinical trials listing and reduced the hits to 90, but again produced listings by clinic, university or hospital and in some cases modality, such as dermatology. I went over to the FDA home page at www.fda.gov and searched for listings of clinical trials directory. I began to find better lists. http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ is a searchable government database of clinical trials and is described as: "ClinicalTrials.Gov This source provides patients, families and members of the public easy access to information about the location of clinical trials, their design and purpose, criteria for participation, and, in many cases, further information about the disease and treatment under study." I searched antibiotic and found 43 studies. This will probably be one of the best "single source" directories for your quest for trial information. The database can also be queried very specifically as shown here: Search by Specific Information Focused Search - search by disease, location, treatment, sponsor... Browse Browse by Condition - studies listed by disease or condition Browse by Sponsor - studies listed by funding organization Resource Information Understanding Clinical Trials - information explaining and describing clinical trials What's New - studies in the news MEDLINEplus - authoritative consumer health information NIH Health Information - research supported by the National Institutes of Health I then searched clinical trials directory at Google and found http://www.centerwatch.com/professional/cwpipeline/ - CenterWatch, Clinical Trials Listing Service. They describe the site as: "CenterWatch Drugs in Clinical Trials Database Thank you for visiting the new online Directory of Drugs in Clinical Trials! CenterWatch has recently improved this online service. Enhancements include more effective and user-friendly search tools, a larger number of drugs and more descriptive drug profiles. The Directory of Drugs is a comprehensive online resource offering detailed profiles of new investigational treatments in phase I through III clinical trials. Updated weekly, the online directory provides information on more than 1,800 drugs for more than 600 disease conditions worldwide in a well-organized and easy-to-reference format. Detailed profile information is provided for each drug." This is a subscription site, however and costs are: A 12 month subscription to this service is $295 for CenterWatch Monthly Newsletter subscribers and $389 for non subscribers. If you are unsure if you subscribe to the monthly newsletter, please call our customer service center at 800-765-9647 for more information. A European site I came across is http://clinicaltrialfinder.com/ Clinical Trial Finder. Thsi site also requires registration and appears to be free, however states: "This website is restricted to the medical profession, their immediate colleagues, those associated with clinical research and healthcare industry professionals" If you qualify, you might register here. The Clinical Research Investigator RegistryTM at http://www.criregistry.com/ describes itself as: "...contains vital information about physicians, clinics, Clinical Research Organizations and Trial Managment Organizations who conduct clinical research trials for Pharmaceutical, Biotechnical and Medical Device companies. You may use this registry without charge to locate and contact those conducting clinical research studies. Physicians, clinics, Clinical Research Organizations and Trial Management Organizations have provided the following information: Introduction/Summary of site's mission or purpose Locations, facilities and affiliations Therapeutic areas, specialties and patient demographics Listings of faculty and staff..." This may hold information of interest to you. At http://www.controlled-trials.com/ , Current Controlled Trials, you can search a metaregister described as follows: "The metaRegister of Controlled Trials is a searchable, international database of ongoing randomised controlled trials in all areas of healthcare. At present, the mRCT also contains some completed trials. Offering access to more than 12,500 records, the mRCT is free. " And another source at http://www.trialscentral.org/ , Tiral Central says: "TrialsCentral provides free and confidential access to listing of clinical trials. TrialsCentral is a resource for anyone seeking up-to-date information to support informed, evidence-based decision making. The CLINICAL TRIALS page now has an easy-to-use database of clinical trials registers that you can search by health condition and geographic location of the trials." I could not search here for "antibiotic" but could search by condition if that is helpful for you. And, Tial Match at http://www.trialmatch.com/ also requires free registration and then will provide: "TrialMatch: A Free Service of LifeMetrix, Inc. TrialMatch was designed to assist visitors to find clinical trials for which they may qualify. Our list of questions is drawn from trial criteria supplied by or interpreted from sponsoring organizations. As you move through the matching process, you will notice that the questions become more detailed. For this tool to work best for you, be prepared with the following information: Stage and site of disease History of previous therapies Allergies History of any other health conditions (such as hypertension/high blood pressure, diabetes) " Lastly, Veritas Medicine offers the following: "Veritas Medicine is a free confidential resource providing access to clinical trials and information on treatment options. Use the Veritas Medicine site to: Find ongoing clinical trials that match your medical & geographical search criteria. Receive Personalized Trial Notification when appropriate new clinical trials begin enrollment. Read articles and receive newsletters from physicians at leading academic medical centers. " They are avialable here: http://www.veritasmedicine.com/ I trust this answer has provided you with a selection of sites to research clinical trials of antibiotics. If anything above is unclear, please do ask for clarification. Best regards, -=clouseau-ga=-
