New Dedicated Server is Slower!
Published by: rose 2009-01-07
  • direct pc to pc transfer::
    Nor can PC 1 use a dedicated cable or satellite connection. . but it would be much more difficult, expensive, and slow than doing it with a modem.

    I am in the process of switching to a new dedicated server. Initially it was very fast, but right now it's dog slow when loading php pages. Here's the server specs:

    New url instead of ip
    WebSite URL: http://www.lancerforums.com/
    PHPInfo: http://www.lancerforums.com/phpinfo.php

    Intel 1Ghz
    512MB RAM
    40 GB HD
    RH 7.2
    PHP 4.1.1
    MySQL 3.23.47

    I have no php.ini file and no my.cnf, but I do have a my-huge.cnf, my-medium.cnf, etc.
    Peer to peer network::
    A switch provides a dedicated connection to each computer, such that one hoggy user cannot slow network performance for the rest of the users.

  • Thanks, I placed the php.ini file in and reloaded apache. Site is still a little slow loading, but that may be the NOC. Let me try a few tracerts and see what I get.

    I also notice that a lot of memory was used up out of the 512MB RAM... could that be causing the slowness?

    Mark

  • Works fine for me, and speed seems reasonable. It's not the fastest, but it's not slow either.

  • does work for me now. works fine but not speedy. this is on asdl from the UK.

  • Thanks,

    I did a search and there is no php ini file of any kind :confused: I ran updatedb and then locate .ini and nothing. I have PHP 4.1.1. Do you happen to have a php.ini file available that I could copy to use?

    Mark

  • No, nothing comes up. I did the my.cnf and restarted mysql and it's gotten better, but not perfect. The url should work now. http://www.lancerforums.com

    Thanks,

    Mark

  • does a search for php.ini-optimized reveal anything ?

    seems fine to me :)

  • if you download the php source tarball and extract it you should fine one in there you can copy and rename to php.ini to use

  • I am getting a 404 on the link, and tracert is unable to resolve domain name.

  • Right now it seems to be slow again. I ran top and noticed it used the swap a little. What do you think could cause these occasional slowdowns? There were about 38-50 users online when it was slowing.

    Do you have any crontabs running a specific times? Backups scripts, log analyzers, file copies - anything like that?

  • create a my.cnf file at /etc/my.cnf with the below settings and restart mysql

    [client]
    port = 3306
    socket = /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

    [mysqld]
    port = 3306
    socket = /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
    skip-locking
    set-variable = max_connections=400
    set-variable = key_buffer=16M
    set-variable = myisam_sort_buffer_size=64M
    set-variable = join_buffer=2M
    set-variable = record_buffer=2M
    set-variable = sort_buffer=2M
    set-variable = table_cache=1024
    set-variable = thread_cache_size=128
    set-variable = wait_timeout=3600
    set-variable = connect_timeout=10

    [safe_mysqld]
    open-files-limit=8192

    [myisamchk]
    set-variable = key_buffer=128M
    set-variable = sort_buffer=128M
    set-variable = read_buffer=16M
    set-variable = write_buffer=16M

    as to php.ini try doing asearch in shell telnet

    locate php.ini

    you might find a file named php.ini-optimised you need to copy and rename it to php.ini in your php configuration path listed in phpinfo at /usr/local/lib and restart apache

  • Hmmm, I still experience some slowness with any php/mysql pages. I just turned on persisitent connections in vB, but so far no real improvement yet.

    Any ideas :confused:
