New to Outpost.need help..
Published by: mike 2009-01-07

  • I am very new to Outpost. I use Outpost 2.5 Pro. The problem is this. I use Windows XP, and everything works fine for me. When my son, or husband try to log on (under their name), the cannot access the internet, or Outlook Express, or anything. I know there must be a way to solve this, but am having trouble. Some of this technical stuff can be pretty confusing...LOL! ANY help at all will be greatly appreciated. :D
    Thanks~ ;)

  • Hello dacotah,

OK...if you are using Switch User, the Outpost GUI only stays active in the originally "logged in" account. In all other accounts, Outpost is still active as a service. So if something is blocked, they will never know it. However, when you switch back to your account, you would be able to see some information on what was blocked. You should either see a rules creation or component popup or possibly something in the Blocked Logs. I would check there first.

A good experiment would be to do this:

    1. Assuming that YOU are the originally "logged in" user, make sure your connection works.

    2. Switch to your husband's or son's account.

    3. Try to browse, e-mail, etc....

    4. Assuming your attempts to access the net in step #3 fail, Switch back to your account.

    5. Once you are switched back, open the Outpost GUI and open the Log Viewer so that you can check the Blocked Logs. There should be some information there.

    Let us know what happens..

BTW.......I grew up in SD.....been living in Texas lately though. :)

  • Ok, I tried that, and couldnt download mail or surf the net. I came back, and checked the log. It said "Blocked by component Control".
Now, when I switched over, I didnt log out of my name, I just switched...

Is that what you were asking? LOL! :p

  • Yes, that is what I was asking. :)

I wonder....did the log say exactly what component was blocked??

When you returned to your account, was there a Component Control Popup waiting?

Do you have component control set to Normal, Minimum, or Maximum?

Sorry for all the questions. This is really not a test. :) I am just trying to understand the situation.

  • Yes, I am using the rules mode, and fast-user switching as well...
No, I don't reboot when switching.

  • Sorry, I didn't answer one of your questions. To view Component Control settings you can open the Outpost GUI and from the menu choose Options ->

Applications. There you will find a Components button that will take you to the settings page for Component Control.

While you are there, check if you have any Blocked or Trusted Applications and let me know what they are. Most or all applications should have rules and so be Partially Allowed.

  • Hi dacotah,

    Welcome to the forums. :)

    I have few quick questions.

Are you using Fast User Switching (Switch User)?

Or do you reboot or log out of the currently active account before logging into another?

Are you operating in Rules Wizard Mode?

  • Lived in Black Hills.

Wow.....you sure picked a good firewall to start with. Outpost has a lot of advanced features. And some can be troublesome to a new user.

If you have a good virus scanner (do you?), and scan your system for spyware once in a while, you may be able to disable some of the features. That will give you some time to learn to use the firewall.

As for learning, I recommend that you start with the Outpost Quick Start Guide and the User Manual which can be viewed or downloaded from the Agnitum download page. This is also a good site: 1

How would you like to go:

Option #1. Log out of your account and into theirs. Then accept the component control popups? This is only a band-aid to get things working until we can figure out what is happening.

Option #2: Send me your config files and I will look at them this afternoon or this evening. Based on that, I can make changes and send back to you or recommend changes that you can make yourself. I can provide an e-mail address by PM.

Also, remember to let me know if you have a good Anti-Virus and good FREE Spyware scanner. This will be especially important if we want to disable some advanced features.

  • Your setup sounds good. I am still confused as to why you do not get component control popups on your account when another user is blocked. That is what happens to rules popups.

You should be able to find your config file by opening the GUI and looking in the blue title bar. It will end in .cfg. Find that file and the file ending in .ini with the same name and send them to the e-mail address I will give in a PM.

Once I get a look at your configuration, we will be in a much better position to figure out the best way to configure Outpost for you.

BTW, Outpost is not the most graceful at handling FUS. It does work with FUS, but not as many users would expect. That is why we generally recommend using log in and log out as opposed to switch user. But, we may be able to make some compromises in your configuration that will allow you to use Outpost with FUS and not have any problems.

    Check your PMs.

  • Ok, when I log completely out of mine, and go into theirs, the firewall seems to work...but I have to open it myself. It seems I have to be logged completely out of one screen name, before I log into another. Know what I mean?

Ok, also under components, this box is checked:
block network access if app. memory was modified by another process. Should it be?

Under apps..the only one I have blocked is msmsgs.exe
Most are partially trusted, while I do have a few that are under trusted.

    Oh, also...
I use AVG antivirus, and I also use Spybot search and destroy. Let me know how to send you the config files...also.
Thanks for all of your help, too!! I feel like I'm totally lost with this...LOL!!

  • iexplore and wscript was blocked. No, there wasnt a component control pop-up....
When you ask what I have component control set to...I don't really understand what you mean, or even where that is...sorry :(

Boy, I thought I knew a little something about computers, but firewalls have me baffled..LOL!

Oh, my husband is from South Dakota, too. What part did you live in? I, myself am from Georgia. ;)
