Just completed a tutorial on noise control. The starting image was an out of the camera 1600 ISO jpg ( pretty noisey ) and it was a little underexposed too.

Noise reduction and high ISO. Digital cameras address noise with built-in noise reduction (NR). However, noise reduction can cause images to look soft.

The tutorial explains using my own software but the workflow holds the same not matter what software you use.
When denoising I try and keep as much detail as possible without getting a plasticy look and remove as much colour noise as possible.

New release of Noise Ninja plug-in posted, adds Photoshop Smart Filter high ISO photography is required and the resulting noise compromises the image.

Jul 28, 2008 Often the manufacturer of the camera has made decisions, either informed or due to lack of expertise, to not process for noise at high ISO.
