Numbing cream while having a tattoo?
Published by: jane 2009-01-07

  • has anybody used it while having a tattoo done and does it work ?

  • I've had a few but never used a numbing cream. It would sound pretty wussy if my friends asked 'Did it hurt?' and I replied with 'No, I used numbing cream because I was scared'. Surely that sort of defies the point of getting one.

  • The stuff you are thinking of is called Emla. It's used in hospitals for children undergoing injections.Reputable tattoo artists won't let you use it as it causes the skin to me too moist when they are working on it, hence making the skin to stretchy.
Avoid getting tattoos a few days before your period is due as you are more sensitive to pain at that time. And stay off tea and coffee before you get inked as this can make you feel worse.Just take a few paracetamol (not aspirin as it thins the blood) before you go under the needle, it helps.

  • You'll ruin a good tattoo by using that stuff.Heavily tattooed myself.I've been featured in two tattoo magazines, I ran a tattoo forum until I became ill.I had a tattoo artist on there that gave good advice, he'd never work on anybody that used that numbing cream as it messes the skin up. • no need - tattoos really dont hurt that much, the best way i can describe it is like having a stick dragged slowly across your skin

I have also had ink done, so i am NOT lying - it must be you just being a pussy

  • Tattooing= Leviticus chp 19 v 28

  • i have 2 tattoo's done, 1 on my ankle and 1 on the inside of my wrist,i have used the cream and i can honestly say it works, you can buy it from the pharmacy, i used it for both of my tattoo's and i didn't feel a thing, i also intend to use for my next one on my foot. i would defiantly recommend it!

  • LOL................... They actually dont hurt...... Well I guess everyone is different...
I find it funny Love it

  • The "numbing cream" consists of lidocaine (like the numbing medication you get at the dentist) and prilocaine (another type of numbing medication). Remember if you ever had an adverse reaction to these medications NEVER USE THEM FOR TATOOING or any other reason.

  • When I was getting the outline on my full back piece.....about 2 hours into it I was starting to hurt and my artist used it on my back so he could finish up and try to help me get thru it. Truly I could not even tell the difference.....it still hurt. My husband said he could tell the difference when the artist used some on him. He hasnt used it on me since. Says it is expensive and doesnt last very long.

  • there is a limitation on the size of the body area /amount of lidocaine (numbing cream) you can safely use on the skin. The cream is indented for medical purposes and is used for small areas. That's why doctors administer anesthesia for larger areas. You can become very sick with too much lidocaine. http://www.tattooremovalreality.com

  • All tattoos hurt, anyone says otherwise is a LIAR,and no you don't automatically look a thug because you have tattoos, after all tattooing has been around 6000 years or more.
The cream is expensive and needs to be applied about an hour before you are tattooed,I have never used it but I have seen friends use it and it helped them as they were not very good sitters nornally but the cream seemed to take away some of the pain...but tattoos on different parts of the body hurts more with some people than others my chest and collarbone absolutely killed after 2 or 3 hours work but my back didn't bother me not even over the spine ....have the cream if you feel you need it and ignore those who profess to know much yet have hardly any ink on them...unlike myself
More importantly think about what you want tattooed and research a good tattooist,it's with you for life and cover ups are costly and not always easy to cover,as I know from experience...but enjoy the experience,it's well worth it...

  • really...tattoos can be painful but everybody's level of pain is different. i've had a few tattoos that haven't hurt. the back of my neck(felt like somebody was poking me with their finger) and my upper left arm did not hurt but my lower back piece was a *****.

in my opinion, the pain is the whole experience with getting the tattoo. it makes you respect the art even more. i have heard the creams work, but i've heard it doesn't have a long affect.

  • Numbing cream is probably not the best idea--if you are willing to get something permanently attached to your body, you may as well get the pain for it.

Not only that, but some ingredients from the cream can irritate the tattoo, as it is an open wound.

  • Don't get tatooed, they look hideous like when a child draws on itself.

Tatoos make you like like a thug and a numpty.

  • Hi,
you can use emla cream or also known as magic cream to kids or amitop. emla takes an hr to work but it last up to 4 hrs amitop only takes 30mins to work not sure how long that last mind.
I know nurses that have had peircing and used this and its worked a treat. Getting hold of it is the problem i only know of hospitals where ive seen it i dont know if you can buy it.
If you were to apply it you would have to cover it and seal the edges so it stays on one place coz soon as air hits it, it goes all runny.

  • It blocks it out slightly, I used a tiny bit on a big tattoo for a piece that was painful, it doesn't block all the pain out and takes 15 minutes to work anyway, meaning you'll have to apply it quickly before your appointment or hope it doesn't wear off by the time you get there. Personally I have found no tattoos that have really hurt me and much prefer them without the problem of "numbing" cream. And I'm not lying, just because you think it hurts, and someone else doesn't, does not mean they are a liar.

  • Don't be soft!! They don't hurt - it's just an irritating itch!!

  • IT STINGS BUT MAKE SURE U ARE READY FOR A LITTLE PAIN, ITS LIKE THEY SAY NO PAIN NO GAIN

  • The numbing cream that is applied prior to the tattoo is fairly short acting so by the time the skin is prepped and the stencil is applied it is already losing its effect.

The best anesthetic is a blue gel to be used when the tattoo has been worked for a long time and your endorphin level pretty much bottomed out. Just a little goes a long way - most artists will apply it, wait a minute and then remove it. It won't effect the ink this way and will really help get you over the hump.

  • My daughter had numbing cream for a tattoo on her lower back, she said that she could not feel anything.
    Ja.
