i just spent an hour fiddling around with the keymap.xml file and i'm still not happy with the config. i think i could get the job done in 5 minutes with an gui integrated quick setup feature. sorry if this has already been suggested, i know it seems obvious.

afterthought: you could also setup nonstandard remotes by having a learning feature. this would make it easy to integrate universal remotes in a home theatre setup.
I was thinking this very same thing.
Does something already exists (script or plugin) to provide this functionality?
Basically, it seems alot more complicated than it should be to get various remotes working with xbmc by manually configuring keymap and figuring out remote codes. Sony RM-AX4000 LCD Touchscreen Remote Control Reviews. Buying :: Pros: Convenient, nice bright touch screen, control EVERYTHING with one SINGLE remote. Cons: Very time consuming to set up. http://www.epinions.com/reviews/SONY_RM_AX4000_16_DEVICE_Universal_Remote_Customizable_LCD_Remote_ControlHOME |
I was thinking that instead of trying to program a remote to use any existing/pre-arranged codes, that it would be far easier to be able to pick up any remote and have xbmc be able to set any particular button to any particular function, with a simple to use UI.
I realize that is possible already to setup keymapping manually, but this not really very user friendly for the non-techy (ie friends or family).
Basically, something like displaying a list of functions and set xbmc to learn the code that the user presses for a chosen function.
I would expect it to be relatively platform agnostic, as long as xbmc can read from the IR sensor, it should not matter what is sending the signals.
I believe this would go a long way to providing user friendly-ness to users of xbmc that may not have been the one to set it up.
