  • In your tag add target="_blank" for example.

  • However, if you are writing strict XHTML, you cannot use the target attribute and have the document validate. You would have to use Javascript: onclick="javascript:window.open (this.href, 'My New Window',

    config='height=300, width=400,
    toolbar=no, menubar=no,
    scrollbars=no, resizable=no,
    location=no, directories=no,
    status=no')">The calling parameters can be modified to change the window defaults. This method works even if Javascript is turned off, although the link will open in the same window. Also, the new window may fail if a popup stopper is working.

    The lack of support for the a target attribute in XHTML strict is probably the result of a philosophical tug-of-war centering around the concept of user control. A user can open a link in a new window any time they choose - using target imposes the designer's will on the user. Some web pundits say this is OK, some think the user is paramount. Finally, one can use an alternate XHTML doctype that allows the target attribute. XHTML is by its very name, eXtensible, and you can create your own Document Type Definition (DTD) which some have done. (For an example see: http://www.dionidium.com/2004/05/xhtml-tests )

    This is all far beyond the interest and intent of your original question, but you should be aware that web practices are changing and target is on the endangered species list. Stick with what has been suggested by Tar above, but as you learn more HTML, be prepared to look at alternate ways of creating new windows. And for your own sake - learn to write for the web using XHTML - it has a steeper learning curve at first, but you will be more inclined to write clean, clear, easily updated code versus the old-school way of doing things with pages of tables and font tags and such.
