can i see subtitle with different name from avi file???
thank's
is it possible to add a subtitle to a running video? is it easy, and is it easy to add another control in my videos? perhaps it should only be a hot key like 'add to playlist'-button?
yes?
hi everyone,
i got a problem. when i'm watching a movie with subtitles, movie and subtitles must have
the same name (for example movie - movie.avi, subtitles - movie.txt), because with diffrent
names subtitles don't load! how can i fix this problem and make that i can load subtitles,
which i want? i want to play different subtitles, with different names, not only subtitles
that name agree with movie name (for example i want to load subtitles1234.txt to a movie
matrix.avi). i want to choose subtitles by me. what to do?
ps. i don't speak english - so sorry... i don't read rules, beacause i don't understand this :(.
i from poland... who know what is it? :p
my last (supposedly) fix hit cvs at the same time your rarred subtitle code did.
selecting either the .idx or the .sub should work. also, just select the rar file it will call cutil::cacherarsubtitles on the archive.
my problem is inconsistent subtitles. i have some avi's with srt's having the same name in the same directory, and the subs won't play. i have other avi's with srt's in the same directory, and they will play. any ideas?
i think it would be a very cool thing to have, to be able to select between subtitle files, in addition to the default automatic selection.
i'll take a look, have a nice weekend!
hi there,
is it possible (via settings or changing the source) to have xbmc search for subtitle files not only in the same directory where the avi file is located, but also in a subdirectory like "subtitles" (or any other subdir)?
greetz,
bas
i'm wondering if that several paths is actually on the developping agenda or not.
anyway i'm confused, as i couldn't use relative paths (preferabbly ...\subtitles ) i decided to configure my default subtitles directory as d:\subtitles and guess what... it doesn't work ?! http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/cry.gif
am i getting something wrong or does that option only work for a directory on a hd drive ? :verysad:
thanks for telling me :)
i've forgotten a few lines of code during my commit, so it doesn't work in current cvs..
give up. that has never, and will never, work
the subtitles-setting in xbmc.xml is only for setting one fixed path where you can store subs (very useful if you've burned the movie without subs and then want subs later)
hi pike,
thanks for reply-ing. however, the solution you give is not what i am looking for (already found that option). i would like xbmc to look for a subtitle in a subfolder of the folder where the movie is in, instead of one specific folder. e.g.:
movie: e:\media\movie 1\movie 1.avi
subtitles: e:\media\movie 1\subtitles\movie 1.dutch.srt
subtitles: e:\media\movie 1\subtitles\movie 1.german.srt
movie: e:\media\movie 2\movie 2.avi
subtitles: e:\media\movie 2\subtitles\movie 2.dutch.srt
subtitles: e:\media\movie 2\subtitles\movie 2.german.srt
can that be done?
bas
can anybody confirm that it works now?

can that be done?
no, that is not possible (which is why i merged your post into this exiting topic thread which request would work as a workaround/solution for selecting subs).
the only workaround now for you (without chaning the code in xbmc) if to move all your subtiles into the same folder as the move (or into subtitles folder in the xml):movie: e:\media\movie 1\movie 1.avi
subtitles: e:\media\movie 1\movie 1.dutch.srt
subtitles: e:\media\movie 1\movie 1.german.srt
movie: e:\media\movie 2\movie 2.avi
subtitles: e:\media\movie 2\movie 2.dutch.srt
subtitles: e:\media\movie 2\movie 2.german.srt
<!-- alternate subtitle directory. if subtitle can't be found !-->
<!-- in same directory as the movie xbmc will look here next: !-->
<!-- adding subtitles with the name "subtitle.[langext].[subextension]" !-->
<!-- will automatically make them be added for all movies as !-->
<!-- alternate subtitles !-->
$home\subtitles
from xboxmediacenter.xml
syra: should be easy to allow select to do ok in the filebrowser dialog - i only designed it for folder browsing initially, thus that bit wasn't done yet.
will look into it.
cheers,
jonathan
i also have a problem with subtitles name length. so it would be great if i could choose subs from hdd myself(like in bsplayer in win)... i know that this is not an easy thing to do, but it would make xbmc even better player... asteron: yes, that cures the problem in question. but, it does not cure the problem of multiple subtitles. for example, 2 different language subs on one cd (ie, native and english).

woiuldn't it be nice if we could choose subtitles from a menu to use for the movie? this way if i got the cd of a friend which has the subtitles with different names than the movie then i don't have to copy the subtitiles,

1) reason is that the player has to be restarted. state could easily be saved/restored though. see cguidialogvideosettings::onclick (i think, might be onsettingchanged). i won't be able to do any xbmc coding for around a month (going on a three week vacation to australia ! :))
2) exactly. nothing one can do about it
3) talk to jmarshall,he made the dialog :)
4) great! :)
a feature like this would be very cool.
my vobsub subtitles have the same name as the video file but i burned them on cds and made a sub-folder called "subtitles" on the cd for the subtitles. and xbmc won't load the subs. even when i specify an alternative path like "d:\subtitles".
maybe you should do
iso9660://subtitles
(the slashed may be backwards)
the xboxmediacenterconfig.xml file specifies a folder which xbmc will check for subtitles in.. you can just dump all your subs in there and as long as the filename matches it works fine.
give up. that has never, and will never, work
the subtitles-setting in xbmc.xml is only for setting one fixed path where you can store subs (very useful if you've burned the movie without subs and then want subs later)
too bad ???
well i'm always very thankful to the development team, but i really hope they will not drop that feature request from the (long term) to do list :)
manual picking of subtitles would solve so many hassles.
actually i'd love to have the ability to have several default subtitles folders including relative ones ( such as ... ; ...\subtitles ; e:\videos\subtitles etc.).
keep on !
please, somebody confirm that i've gotten cvs correct now. like you syra :)
or perhaps hibaby.
pike, i may have been unclear. the reason why i have to extract the subtitles is because both the subtitle rarfile (containing .sub file) and the subtitle file (idx) file are always packed into another rarfile.
so, this is _very_ common to some of us:
whatever_film_name-subs.rar contain
whatever_film_name-cd1.rar (which contains the whatever_film_name-cd1.sub)
whatever_film_name-cd1.idx
whatever_film_name-cd2.rar (which contains the whatever_film_name-cd2.sub)
whatever_film_name-cd2.idx
now, these subs will not load correctly unless i extract the whatever_film_name-subs.rar to the subtitles dir. this is my case, and i believe quite a few others.
even though this case above might be solved some clever way (i'm guessing spiff may have the same problem as me so he might be on it ), it wasn't really my point. my point is that there will always be situations where the desired subtitle file cannot load automaticly, which is why this feature should be implemented in an easy way like my suggestion above. it should add flexibility (!) and not bloat anything.
what are your comments on the idea in my last post and can it be done? is it possible to add a subtitle to a running video? is it easy, and is it easy to add another control in my videos? perhaps it should only be a hot key like 'add to playlist'-button?
a feature like this would be very cool.
my vobsub subtitles have the same name as the video file but i burned them on cds and made a sub-folder called "subtitles" on the cd for the subtitles. and xbmc won't load the subs. even when i specify an alternative path like "d:\subtitles".
so it would be very helpful if you can specify the subtitle file you want to play, even if it is in another folder or has another name.
best thing would be a file manager prompt where you can surf through your files and select the subtitle file. but this would be hard to do, of course.
for example i find myself constantly extracting rarred subs to $home\subtitles because the rarfile has not the same name as the videofile. this kind of takes away a bit of the rar-functionality, which i am very grateful for and i know you worked so hard on! i agree that a way to select a subtitle file for the currently running video-file should be implemented.
spiff, although your subtitle directories solution solves some problems when loading subs, there will always be situations where the desired subtitle-file cannot be loaded automaticly.
a lot of hassle could be skipped if we are allowed to manually load a subtitle file. for example i find myself constantly extracting rarred subs to $home\subtitles because the rarfile has not the same name as the videofile. this kind of takes away a bit of the rar-functionality, which i am very grateful for and i know you worked so hard on!
i have a dream on how we could implement a way to select a subtitle-file. why not just assing a new control in my videos, "add subtitle to current video" or something like that. then i could just jump out of fullscreen from the currently playing (or paused) video and select the desired sub-file (even inside a rar-archive!) and hit the "add subtitle to current video". this way we can use all the previous file-manager functions from my videos. we do need to add some subtitle fileformats in my videos of xboxmediacenter.xml though.
any comments on this idea of mine? can it be done?
the only thing i miss from normal pc movie player (like classic mplayer or crystal player) is the ability to select the subtitle file you wish to use while playing the movie.
i have several (hundreds) already burned cd's and dvd's with movies(avi's) which subtitles files have different names from the movie file, so the xmbc doesn't load them; therefore, each time a want to load the subtitle i have to copy it to the subtitles folder of xmbc, this sometimes is kind of annoying and timeconsuming. it would be nice to have a menu option or an osd option to load the desire .srt or .sub file (regardless of the name).
please, somebody confirm that i've gotten cvs correct now. like you syra :)
or perhaps hibaby.
hey spiff,
tried it out last night, nothing happened when i selected the sub-file, do i have to press another button? do i select .idx or .sub? i could not browse a rar-file to select fully rarred subtitles, same thing nothing happened when i selected rar-file and tried to open it.
i'm not convinced i have the newest cvs, so i will compile again tonight and try then. i'll get back to you.
some of my movie's subtitle is in a directory like this
[movie directory]\english\[filename].eng.srt
i try to add this in xboxmediacenter.xml
*$home\subtitles
*.\english
seems not work for me.
someone should help? thanks a lot.
hi all,
ok, this seems like a rehash of a question but i'm still not quite sure if it's possible or not. otherwise this would be a suggestion and i shall post it to the respective forum.
can xbmc play srt, sub or txt files?
and not the ones that are named *exactly* like the movie but with different names. i have a *lot* of movies on cd / dvd and those have subtitles in several languages, making the same naming method impossible. i'm sure i'm not alone (at least, i think not) and some movies without subtitles are just not doable. think japanes, korean, french, thai end what have you not. watching these movies without subtitles is charming in it own klunky way but not prefferred :d
i know of the subtitle folder i can designate in the xml file but i want xbmc to be an 'armchair' experience, meaning that pressing a button and selecting a file from the current playing location as the subtitle file and have mplayer use that would be...an armchair experience :d
hope this is possible or that it's otherwise considered an essential part of the system for all those people that have plenty of already burned discs with a naming convention that can not be altered so easily.
and please, keep up the good work with xbmc, it *is* awesome!
cheers,
steven
question the fixed folder set for subtitles will be used only if theres a equivalent sub there?
example
no sub on dvd
sub on fixed folder ==== play from folder
sub on dvd and fixed folder === play from folder..
sub on dvd
no sub on fixed folder === since there isnt any sub he gets from dvd...... or in this case he totally ignores subs on dvd and i must have on fixed folder?
?
hi spiff,
now i got it working, i didnt understand i had to press right or left to select ok!
1. if i have paused before browsing for subs, it will start playing directly once subs have been selected and cached, not when i press play again.
2. the film skippes back/forward a couple of seconds. i guess this is to find some keyframe on both video and subs?
3. perhaps we could use a to select ok when the focus is over an item that is either rar/idx/sub-file?
4. it works beatifully! thanks a lot!
added: manual browse for subtitle.
known limitations: not saved to db, no rarred subtitles yet (hang on...)
i have said it before, but once again, you the man!

if that is true, i am very greatfull and i will wait for a good working cvs (currently i am having troubles running most of my scripts) and check if it works.

i agree! subtitle selection would be very welcome.
i agree. this is the only option i miss in xbmc.

hi all,
just wanted to add something on the subtitle selection topic:
i suppose it's not realy needed to have a select dialog presented to the user, perhaps a key on the remote to 'flip' through all the .srt and .sub files on the disc/subtile folder would be enough. makes building this option a bit easier i guess. still, being presented with a dialog and chosing the subtitle file would be coolest but i could very well live with a key on the remote and skipping through all available subtitle files is good enough for now. perhaps an entry in xboxmediacenter.xml designating certain extensions as subtitle files would be handy as well.
just thinking out loud :d
cheers,
steven

that would be sweeeeeeeet, really! =)
i think it is a really good idea! but no comments, devs, anyone?
everyboby have's the same problem. a suggestion to xbmc team to implement: a function that offers the possibility to select a subtitle in divx/xvid movies.
not only that but renaming and copying the subtititles to match the movie name can be a pain since the names of the .avi files can sometimes be long and there is no keyboard (at least for me), unless i connect the xbox to the computer. but now we're getting ridiculous if i have to turn on my computer just to play a .avi with subtitles.
- renato
there is a tip for you to allow xbmc choosing different subs with the same name for a video: it is to change with a software on your pc the type of the subs, for example having the english sub named like movietitle.srt in subripper format, and the french sub like movietitle.sub in microdvd format. this is easily possible with subresync which is included in the soft vobsub. beware to keep the same framerate setting from the original sub when you save the new sub type.
hi,
i was waiting for this feature since more than one year ago! and now finally it was implemented!!!
congratulations!!! xbmc it completed now for me.
cheers.
alfredo.
ps: i will try the new cvs tonight.
somehow i think this so overlooked. i would imagine it would be easy to implement. but maybe not.....
