In the fleet the nickname for the OS Rate is "scope-dopes." Their "A" School is in Dam Neck, Virginia. They have "C" Schools (like Air Intercept Controller) but you will normally not be assigned a "C" School until the end of your first enlistment.

As a brand new baby OS you are going to the fleet. Your first tour of sea duty will be 54 months. If you are still in the navy you'll be eligible for a 36 month shore tour. Most OS shore tours are as instructors or as general duty, recruiters and boot camp company commanders.

You'll work either in the Combat Information Center (CIC) or on the Bridge. In CIC you'll monitor and plot radar contacts. You could be responsible for either surface or air contacts. On the bridge you'll wear headphones connected to CIC and keep tracks of contacts on a large display board for the Officers driving the ship.
In port you will most likely be assigned to cleaning and maintenance details in the mornings. If the afternoons you will be trained by senior petty officers on your PQS (job qualifications) for your underway watches and advancement requirements for PO3. You maybe assigned to work maintaining nautical charts or maintaining the TPL (Tactical Publications Library).
Underway you work in Combat Information Center maintaining a computer tracking console for surface or air contacts. You will also learn tactical drills and other functions of CIC. First you need to learn and master the basics of computer, radar and talking on a radiotelephone.

C schools include Air Intercept Contreoller ( Figher Aircraft), ASATC (Antil Submarine Warfare Air Traffic Controller, P-3 and helicopters). Data link Management, Tomahawk or Harpoons weapons system operator. You usually don't get a C school until you make E-5, so study hard, learn your job and advance to OS2 as soon as you can.
Sea rotation is 54 months to 24036 months at shore depending on which job you are doing. On shore you can be a Recruiter, Instructor, Company commander (PO1 and above), brig duty or any other general duty billet. Our job is at sea and considered a sea intensive rate.
