Outpost Firewall Pro 2009 6.5.2509.366.0663 software download :: Aug 15, 2005 Expect to spend a little time learning how to configure it securely; Outpost does not come configured perfectly out of the box (you'll find http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/21186HOME | With the release of version 2.1 (see the announcement (http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9473)), here are a few issues that may be of interest to those upgrading from 2.0.
Outpost Keys
Agnitum has allowed those who purchased Outpost 1.0 Pro to use their key for 2.0 even after the one-year upgrade period, due to the delay in releasing 2.0. However, 2.1 should now only accept keys purchased within the previous year. Registration status should be shown at the bottom of the 2.1 My Internet window. If upgrading, please check that you have a valid key before installing 2.1 to avoid any subsequent difficulties. If in doubt, please contact Agnitum (www.agnitum.com/support/supportform.html) to check your key's expiration date.
If you purchased Outpost from a reseller rather than from Agnitum themselves, please contact the reseller for upgrade information. The key you have may not work with the version of Outpost downloadable from Agnitum's website.
Users with Lifetime Subscriptions (given to purchasers of the very first release candidate of Outpost v1) can continue using their keys with Outpost 2.1 - the lifetime subscription should be shown in the My Internet window.
Upgrading from 2.0
Configuration files from version 2.0 should work with 2.1 with one exception - the Active Content plugin will need to be configured from scratch since it has been rewritten.
2.1 will not be made available through Agnitum Update until support for all the languages offered by 2.0 is included (a few are still pending). Until then, visit Agnitum's website (www.agnitum.com) to download a copy.
Agnitum News and Plugin Information
Outpost can display the latest news from Agnitum in the My Internet window and download information on plugins. This does require a rule permitting Outpost access to www.agnitum.com, remote port 80. These features can be disabled via the Tools menu.
Active Content
Lots new here. Please note that this plugin can now filter external content (i.e. anything from another domain) - this will be replaced by [EXT] to distinguish it from items blocked by the Ad-Filter.
Log File Settings
To configure the maximum size and/or retention period of log file data, open the Log Viewer and go to File/Log cleanup settings...
Rules Settings
The Deny and Reject actions have been replaced by Block (which discards traffic without sending any reply). Rules processing order has been changed with Trusted Zone LAN settings now taking priority over Blocked Application settings (please see the Outpost Rules Processing Order (http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8394) FAQ for more details).
Plugins
Blockpost currently does not block IP addresses with Outpost 2.1 (please see the OP v. 2.1 (http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9521) thread for details). No problems have been reported with HTTPLog.
Spm,
The registration status in Outpost 2.1 does provide information on subscriptions and I would suggest that this is a better solution for most than an unsolicited email - this should address points 1 and 3 that you raised. With point 2, I do believe that you can change your email address through Agnitum's support page (certainly if you lose a licence key and need a replacement, you can specify an alternate email address to send it to).
The 2.1 upgrade has not, to my knowledge, been made available through Agnitum Update which is probably a good thing since Active Content settings need to be redone and this is best done via a manual upgrade.
There could be a warning on uninstallation - and more usefully a short grace period (say, a few days) for expired keys to allow for licence renewals with a new install. This however was not flagged as an issue during the beta test since testers were supplied with separate beta keys which did not need renewal.
So yes, this could be improved upon and doubtless will be in future. Considered and mature feedback such as your post is always welcome. However the (thankfully few) "Agnitum suck" type posts coming from those who seem to think that a free lunch should include breakfast and dinner also are not, and get treated accordingly. Nice offer. Thanks for the info.
Steve,
The ticket has been updated to request that there also be an active element included. I will let you know what they decide.
Excellent news Steve! :) Enjoy the new build.
thanks agnitum for ripping off us customers with v2.0 who have been waiting so long for 2.1 and won't get the upgrade since we purchased it too long ago. what a great way to do business.

First, all the registration status shows is this:
Registration name:
Status: Single
... there is no indication of the subscription expiry date. Second (and most importantly) even if it did, this kind of passive info doesn't help. In order to read it, the user has to launch the Outpost UI and look for the info. Once Outpost is configured properly to do its job, the user shouldn't normally have to bring up the UI at all, except under rare circumstances.
The key point I am making is that a vendor who offers subscription-based licensing has a responsibility to actively manage user subscriptions, giving the user adequate and timely reminders to keep their subscriptions up to date. This needs to be done sensitively, of course, but the alternatives I posted are all valid ways of achieving this. My personal preference is for the product (i.e., Outpost in this case) itself to manage the reminders.
We do have a few subscriptions with other vendors here for other products, and in all cases they implement a reminder/renewal system which works. I believe Agnitum needs the same.

Steve,
It does address one of your concerns although obviously not in a way that you would like. If you would like I can modify the suggestion to request that Outpost produce a pop-up similar to the ones that you now get for the log cleaner that notify you that your license is about to expire, say everyday for one week prior to expiration. Beyond that I am not sure what else to suggest as far as a notification mechanism from the program.
If you wish to reciveve email or any other form of communication directly from Agnitum regarding your license renewal I suggest you communicate this to them by sending an email to support@agnitum.com.

Steve,
It should not have changed, but if for some reason it did as long as you at least have one of the emails showing your purchase date it should be no trouble to get the situation fixed. We will help you as best we can.
I am very disappointed and annoyed about Agnitum and the Upgrade obscure for registered users, Renew topic etc. Thus I installed the new version, after I deinstalled my "old 2.xx Outpost" and had settled the Registry. I assumed my old key functions. After the input also the program thanks me and demands me up to terminate and start Outpost again. Then I requested my "Subscription" to renew and am passed on the 'Renew site ', where I mean personal data and is to leave my old key. So far I received no feedback or an E-Mail. Is that customer relationship at its best?
P.S. By the way the Hyperthread BSOD bug still exists and is reproducible.
Sorry for my poor english.
I installed v 2.1 without realising that I needed a new key. However, I am now unprotected while I wait for a message from Agnitum as to how to get my new licence key (I don't want to uninstall version 2.1, reinstall v 2.0 then go through the whole precedure yet again). Could they not have allowed a period of changover (e.g., 14 days) before v 2.1 became disabled? Also, since my e-mail address has changed, I put the new details in the additional information box on the Web site. Will they use this or is the process automated (in which case, I won't receive their communication)? Finally, anyone have any idea how long I might need to wait before I can purchase my new licence?
Thank you, sir. Pete

I've amended the first post in this thread to stress that a valid key is needed when upgrading to 2.1 (non-upgraders installing Outpost for the first time would, of course, get a 30-day trial period).
From the posts so far, it would seem that 3 features should be considered: Having the subscription expiry date displayed in the Registration Status; One or more subscription alerts from Outpost close to the expiry time (which would also appear in the Alerts log); A short grace period for new installations using expired keys to allow for renewals. If you have any further suggestions to make Steve, please let us know. Sorry about the inconvenience - speaking personally, I never even considered this a possible issue. Hopefully it can be addressed within the next version or so, but we can't speak for Agnitum on this.
Thanks for taking this up MegaHertz - a pity this never arose in beta testing though. I was considering pinning this thread also, but it seems to be floating at the top of the forum all by itself!
Ah, well,
guess i'll have to say goodbye to y'all, have enjoyed my time here with all of you and outpost, but as my license for v2 was purchased prior to feb '03, i am unable to use it to install v2.1 & have no method at present of buying another license as the UK distributor does not take switch debit cards....
it is a bit irritating that new updates seem to get released just AFTER the expiry of licenses so i have to pay again for fixes i have been waiting for for a long time.
i've reinstalled v.2 for the moment, will have to look around for something else in the long run in case it stops working.
Many thanks MegaHertz & Paranoid2000 I will await a reply from Agnitum. I really like Outpost for many reasons and it suits my computing needs.

Jamie3,
Those who purchased 1.0 were allowed to upgrade to 2.0 regardless of when they had purchased. Anyone who has since purchased 2.0 (released in May, 2003) should be able to upgrade to 2.1 since they will be in the 1 year free upgrade period. The only people who will need to renew their licence for 2.1 are 1.0 users who purchased their copy more than a year ago.
This is called a "free upgrade" - on which planet is this considered a rip-off?

sorry this IS a rip off, there are not enough new feature to rectify a renewal of keys for 2.0 buyers.
2.1 is a bugfix
I will not renew my key and I hope several users will also not ! Too many good free firewalls out there

Redman,
Did you backup your v2 configuration files as suggested above? If so, then reinstalling 2.0 (and reloading that config) should not involve too much work and would be far better than running without a firewall.
Another method could be to use RegEdit to delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREAgnitumOutpost FirewallKey registry key which may cause your copy to revert to a 30-day trial. Disclaimer: I have not tried this myself so proceed at your own risk!
I do not know what the timescales are for licence key upgrades but I would certainly recommend a reminder email if you do not receive it within the next couple of days.
It was offered to those who purchased Outpost 1.0 when it was a Release Candidate, i.e. prior to full release.
Thanks Paranoid2000, for your efforts: that addresses everything very well. :)
Did Outpost say that your key had expired? If so, did you purchase it more than a year ago? The "one year of upgrades" policy has been in place for the last couple of years and if you did purchase more than a year ago, you have had the benefit of a free upgrade to 2.0. Aren't Agnitum horrible?
If you are still annoyed with Agnitum after this then I would suggest you purchase another vendor's product. Not only will you be expressing your dissatisfaction in a concrete fashion (by not paying for a renewal), you will also get to experience how other companies handle upgrades in the commercial world. And guess what? They all charge for upgrades too...
As for your email, given that 2.1 was released yesterday it is quite likely that there are a lot of renewals from Outpost 1.0 purchasers - give it a couple more days then send a reminder. In the meantime, consider reinstalling 2.0.
With regard to the Hyperthreading issue, this post (http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9382#post67403) may be of some help to those still encountering this problem.

Aren't Agnitum horrible?I feel I need to comment on this...
According to my records, I purchased version 1.0 of Outpost in December 2002 (and subsequently upgraded free of charge to version 2.0 in June 2003). Now, I have no objection to Agnitum charging for upgrades (on either a per-upgrade basis or a subscription basis), but I do have a difficulty with their (or Outpost's) lack of management of subscriptions.
When 2.1 was announced, I followed the configuration backup, reinstallation and configuration restoration advice given here, only to find - like others - that my subscription had expired and that I no longer had a functioning copy of Outpost. I then renewed my subscription - which only took a few hours, despite the convoluted process that Agnitum have put in place (i.e., submitting a request with my registration key, to obtain an e-mail directing me to the appropriate order page).
This process does leave somewhat of a sour taste. What I would expect for Agnitum's subscription based licensing is at least some of these:
1. A reminder e-mail to my registered e-mail address (as used on purchase) in good time prior to the expiration of my subscription;
2. A means to change the registered e-mail address as necessary, in order that reminders are sent to the correct address (though I personally haven't changed my e-mail address since purchase);
3. Timely reminders by Outpost itself that my subscription was nearing expiration, so giving me ample opportunity to renew;
4. A message from Outpost's update facility that a new version was available for manual download (with a reminder to check my subscription expiration); and
5. On attempting uninstallation of Outpost, a clear warning that my subscription has expired and any subsequent attempt to install a working copy of a newer version would not succeed.
Given these failings, Agnitum also failed to provide a clear explanation on their web site, or anywhere during the download process, of the need for a current subscription (and the consequences of proceeding without one).
If they are unable or unwilling to properly support customers with subscription licences, they should not offer them in the first place, and revert to a per-upgrade fee basis.
I can fully understand customers' frustrations and anger with Agnitum over this. Outpost is basically a good product, but Agnitum's customer support leaves a lot to be desired.
Hi Paranoid2000,
how about recommended isntallation?
a) Installs over existing 2.0 installation with proper procedur eg shutdown outpost etc.
b) uninstall outpost v2.0, reboot & continue with ver2.1 installation.
any tips?
thanks:)
Steve,
Just so you know I did read your posts and the reason I choose the route I did was because of this statement.

I have amended the Outpost 2.1 announcement (http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9473) and the first post in this thread to mention current issues with the Blockpost plugin (see the OP v. 2.1 (http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9521) thread for details).
Registration status should be shown at the bottom of the My Internet window.
I'm probably being dense, but I can't find it. This is the My internet screen, right?
-bert
I have also installed the new version, expecting to have a grace period in which to receive my new key but - nada.
1. Deleting the "key" registry-key does not seem to help, I still get a box telling to order or go away.
2. At least you may start the Outpost service without the interface if you go to services, that way you won't feel so naked, I guess :-) Set it to restart the service automatically if it shuts down.
3. As in any relationship, first impressions are the most important. 2.1 didn't give me a good one because throughout the installation it wanted to convince me that it was version 2.0. If the installation is sloppy already, what can I expect from the program itself?
Just my 10 cents...
UPDATE:
3. is due to the fact that I am unable to download a new version of Outpost from the website. Instead, I get 2.0.238 :-(
2. Starting the service doesn't do anything useful, Leaktest fails.
Sorry if this was clearly explained elsewhere...
Will current Outpost Pro 2.0 license owners (purchased less than one year ago) be able to use the existing reg key in order to run V2.1?
Thanks
Optigrab
PS If this was stated elswhere, would someone perhaps mention the appropriate link in this thread?
Please check the Outpost Pro v2 Previous Build Download Location (http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8044) FAQ thread for a link to download Outpost v2.0.
If you still encounter problems with your card, try contacting Agnitum directly (www.agnitum.com/support/supportform.html). They may be able to offer a workaround.

Is this presumption helpful?
Its correct, the old key was expired. After renewing I got a new key and Outpost works fine. But the update procedure is not still transparency enough. How could I know, that I use an old key? There are no detailed information in Outpost. And a trial period after renewing would be helpful.

Guys - I want 2.0 back (that would be the one that my key worked for) since for some reason, the page where you purchase the "update" won't accept my CC (although every other site on the planet does ).
So where can I re-d/l v.2?
(Yes, like an idiot, I totally un-installed v.2 prior to trying to get 2.1, thinking everything would go swimmingly). Pete

It seems strage that a completely new user gets 30 days grace to try the new build, while a person that has PAID for the program in the past gets ZERO grace period. I guess they are saying that if past paid customers want to try out the new features they have to PAY FIRST. Seems a funny way to treat the paying customers.
I think a message should appear telling you that your license has expired during installation and that anyone with a past license should get to try the uypdate for the same 30 days as a new customer if they continue the install.
Also I agree that you should be able to tell the expiration date of your license when viewing the About information from the control panel.

This is just a testimony for more or less "unsatisfied customers" .I do not have already upgraded because I am away from home. But I understand and support Outpost Policy regarding upgrades ; those who were "born" with version 1.0 and got a lifetime key are happy .Others , like me who had to switch from another brand to Outpost in despair and hurry can just make the difference ;for no reason , will I decide to leave Outpost ;First of all it's a brilliant firewall (regarding customers's friendly interface , you may hardly find better!) and works at perfection ;second , with respect to others , it is very CHEAP ; third , you may have to wait for a reply , or have to insist e-mailing , but YOU ALWAYS get a friendly and accurate answer (just compare with others!!!!!!!!!!!!!) ;fourth : there is this wonderfull forum which is full of very serious posts , detailed , competent and so on .
Outpost Firewall deserves APPLAUSE . OLIVIER GEBUHRER
Ah. That'd explain it.
Dang, I thought I had an easy way of finding out when I had bought my pro version *before* uninstalling 2.0 and installating 2.1.
Guess I'll have to go and dive into my administrativia after all...

I have contacted Agnitum via the subscription renewal webpage yesterday. Would it be quicker to use the online support contact page at the website as I still dont have a working key. Or does anyone have any suggestions a to how I might be able to get things working with v2.1?
Thanks,

Welcome to the forums Dale,
Since this is a user-run forum you may be better off posting your views to Agnitum themselves (1). I would point out that having the full 30-day trial restart after an upgrade could (if several updates were released) allow someone several months free usage so a shorter period (5 days say) would be more appropriate in my view.
However this is solely my personal opinion. :)

Either method should do - I assume that you did get the original key from Agnitum since I don't know of any resellers being involved in lifetime offers.

Had your previous post been specific in this regard (rather than just saying "I'm annoyed") then you would have received less of my "presumption". Glad to hear you have your upgrade sorted though.

Yes I thought I had got it from them. I did request my key after losing it. In the reply from Agnitum them they say I purchased from Sharit.com via Agnitum website about Febraury 1st 2002 at the time I requested lost key I was using version 1.0.1511.1038 according to the same email. Is it possible my original lifetime subscription got changed when I requested my lost key?

Aside from Active Content, 2.1 should be OK with your 2.0 configuration. I would suggest the following steps to upgrade: Download Outpost 2.1; Disconnect from the Internet; Exit and Shutdown Outpost 2.0 - copy the configuration .cfg file and .ini file to another folder if you wish to import them into 2.1; Uninstall Outpost 2.0 and restart your system when prompted; Install Outpost 2.1 and restart your system when prompted; Load the configuration files you copied from 2.0 or reconfigure from scratch; Go to the Active Content plugin and configure it (it will be set to Enable everything by default); Connect to the InternetAs to the merits of upgrading versus a new configuration, while I have had a few strange issues crop up with 2.0 betas, I did not encounter anything with 2.1. A new configuration does give you the chance to look at things afresh but can be a lot of work - especially if you had lots of customised website settings in Active Content (though you will need to do those anyway).
Yes! Finally, logging controls in OP. And quite customizable ones too. For me personally, this was the only issue that needed to be solved asap when I started using OP2. Asap turned out to be longer than expected, but hey, I learned to live without firewall logs. (disabled logging in 2.0) May need to get used to the idea of having them at my disposal again. :D
