Outpost 2009 let out a connection without asking me. Is this normal for 6.x?
Published by: webmaster 2009-01-07
  • The software SPSS checks for updates. On this machine, I don't want anything connecting without me knowing it. I installed SPSS and was using it when I got a pop up saying here was an update. Outpost never asked me about if I can allow it to connect to the net (my answer would've been no).

I don't have training mode on and its on rules wizard. I checked the app rules and none of the SPSS executables are listed (meaning Outpost supposedly has not detected anything from this app try and connect to the net). The logs show that nothing had gotten or tried to get net access that was not local, since the reboot of the box the day before.

What is going on here? Is SPSS using some rootkit mumbo jumbo that Outpost didn't see or did Outpost totally not do what the whole point of the app is for and totally droped the ball?!

I manually added all the SPSS executables with the block all rule and now its checks for updates are being logged.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks mgsxman!

That is a really terrible thing. For a desktop firewall to ignore an executable and just lets its packets pass? And its an known bug that just hasn't gotten fixed? What if it ignored a trojan? I hate to say it but this program has really gone downhill. :(

  • Do you have NOD32 v3 or any other proxy server installed that bypasses the firewall?

  • it is an old bug...OPFW dont see some apps...after u add it manually - it does :)

  • That's the thing, there was nothing related to it in the log. Its like it bypassed Outpost or Outpost ignored it.

The logs show that nothing had gotten or tried to get net access that was not local, since the reboot of the box the day before.

  • No proxy servers, nor NOD. That machine uses net access so infrequently and never is used for downloading anything besides official software updates, so I didn't put AV on it.

  • What do the OP logs say was the rule used to acquire the update?
