I have set firefox (and several other apps) to be fully allowed but Outpost still closes packets to certain ports. Any ideas how I can stop it closeing these packets?
cheers
EDIT: im running XP home SP2 and Outpost 2.1.292.3816
Welcome to the forums Nik3k,
If you are seeing packets blocked with the reason "Packet sent to closed port" then this is most likely due to the receiving application not accepting traffic (if it was not running for example). With Firefox, this should only happen if you are using a local proxy for handling traffic (for instance, a web filter like Proxomitron (www.proxomitron.info)). If you are doing so, then please check that the applications are running and have the correct rules.
If this does not apply or you are unsure, please post full details of the entries you see in your Outpost Blocked logs.
I am running zonealarm on the server and outpost on the client.
I have added ICS as detailed in the link but already I have a few packets closed :(Are all packets being blocked or just some? If some (which your screenshot suggests), then this is not a serious problem and likely due to Firefox opening connections more aggressively than Outpost is expecting (you may be able to adjust this via Firefox's settings but I don't know the specifics). If all packets are being blocked, then this suggests something conflicting with Outpost - check that you have properly uninstalled any other firewalls (for ZoneAlarm check the 1 FAQ since this does not always uninstall properly) and disable any other network-level software (e.g. packet sniffers, port monitors, network diagnostics or VPN software).Another small problem is whenever I use the firefox extension ieview (http://ieview.mozdev.org/), which loads the current firefox page in IE, I get the message in outpost's log file: "Disable all activity for iexplore.exe because it run hidden" and IE says "cannot find server". How can I allow it to run from the firefox extension? With Outpost 2.1 you need to Exit and Shutdown Outpost, open the Outpost.ini file with Notepad (this file should be in the Outpost program folder) and check for the following entry: Alternate:: offer up to 11mbit (closer to 6mbit usable) over short Probe packets. iexplore.exe
Remove iexplore.exe and this should resolve the problem. Note however that this will cause Outpost to fail some leaktests. Outpost 2.5 handles this better (it prompts for such items) and upgrading to it is well worth doing if you are still in your free upgrade period.
Is the ICS gateway running Outpost or the ICS client? Outpost should recognise ICS automatically but often extra configuration is needed (see the 1 FAQ for more details). If you are running any other firewall on the ICS gateway, then it also needs to be configured to work with ICS.
I connect to the net through another computer running Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Here is a screenshot of the outpost log:

edit: should I check the 'trust' box for the network as well?
thanks very much, everything is fine now :)
