So I'm house sitting with my boyfriend (at his house, his stepmums dog) and every time we leave the house the dog just stands there staring at us, shaking.
The dog is kind of needy.
Doesn't play well with others.
Tends to be aggressive when larger dogs try to sniff her bum at the dog park.
Apparently she always "gets the shakes" when she is being left in the house alone (or outside)
POINT IS: Do you lot have any tips for helping her get over her anxiety or for me so I feel less guilty when I have to go to class?
first of all it does not sound much like seperation anxiety, in case of seperation anxiety a dog will bark like crazy when you leave....cry....scratch the door....pee and poop all over the house while ur gone...chew on furniture and clothes, shoes, etc. thats seperation anxiety.
I know that cus my adopted dog had that...we live on the 7th floor...we could hear his barks all the way on the ground floor...i read many sites of how to heal it but nothing worked...he just needed time....he would start going crazy as soon as he saw me reach for my purse and put my shoes on....took him 3 weeks to get over it...he just needs to realize that you WILL BE COMING BACK and when he learns that he will be alright. good luck....just give it time oh and ignore him 10mins before you leave...dont make the good byes emotional cuz it will be harder on him and when you come dont make a big deal out of it...ignore him the first 5mins and then when he is calm you pet him (dont over do it) MyDogs123.com - All About Dogs and Cats - Welcome to the Frontpage:: and owner; it can also help build confidence in timid dogs (and Understanding Separation Anxiety In Dogs << Start < Prev 1 2 Next > End >> Page 1 of 2 http://www.mydogs123.comHOME | Boise Idaho greyhounds sighthound adoption:: Greyhound, Portuguese Grande & Medio Podengo, Rhodesian Ridgeback, (Lion Hound) This will help to prevent any problems associated with separation anxiety. http://www.easy-finder.com/ghound/about.htmHOME |

hmmm...sounds like the dog is a bit anxious.
the book
I'll Be Home Soon
talks about dealing with separation anxiety.
There is no fast way to train the dog, if he has always been this way he needs to be retrained and is there any point if he will be going back to the old ways when his owner comes home ?
Dogs pick up on when you are going out by what you do before you go so he is already getting stressed. Change what you do if you can, my dog knows by what clothes I put on so I cannot trick her but she doesn't stress as she knows I will come back. When I first started leaving my Molly I went out of the house and then back in a minute or two later then went for longer and longer till I knew she was okay. Don't come back to the house till the dog has settled down and don't fuss over the dog when it is showing signs of stress as he is being rewarded for it.
Good luck
I just read what you added to your question and it sounds like it is a very spoilt dog wanting and getting his own way, he has been made this way so his owner feels good and needed for themselves not considering the dog.
I sounds like he thinks he is top dog and shaking is his way of getting attention. Totally ignore the bad behaivour and reward the good behaivour. Don't let the dog up on the lounge with you or even get between you. You will have to make the dog sleep in its bed maybe in the laundry or bathroom like it is a pup - put his bedding and a favourite toy with him also if there is any clothing of his owner's in the the house put that with him. Don't go to him if he acts up but do go to him when he is quiet and give him attention and a treat but don't let him out. I will be hard for a few nights on you but don't give in.
It is called tough love
