Muslims are being urged not to buy Zam Zam water from anyone attempting to sell it after a vanload of contaminated counterfeit cases was seized by inspectors in the London Borough of Hackney.
The traders were attempting to target mosques in the area where there is a huge demand for the sacred water.
But voluntarily surrendered the bogus supply to the Environmental Health inspectors after being caught in the act.
Principal Environmental Health Officer, Dr Yunes Teinaz, who has been battling the problem for a number of years, said it was imperative that the Muslim community be made aware of the dangers of drinking this water containing high levels of arsenic and nitrate.

"This water, which is on sale, has high levels of arsenic which can damage the health especially in children and the elderly. It is poisonous water," he warned.
He added: "I recommend the Muslim community not to buy any Zam Zam water, but to only take it from pilgrims who have visited the Holy Land of Mecca and brought back their own personal supply. They [pilgrims] should make sure that the water is put in a proper recognised container."

Although the City of Westminster had taken action in removing the water from a few shops, the water is still being sold throughout the country, and continues to be brought in from abroad.
But the scope of the problem is much wider, according to Dr Teinaz. He believes the distribution of the product from Britain to Europe and America is part of a network of international criminals in a multinational trade worth millions.
As a result, he has urged the Food Standard Agency (FSA) to issue an immediate food hazard warning and make the local authorities more aware.
A spokeswoman from the FSA said it had worked closely with local Muslim groups to alert them to the risks posed by the water. It had also asked Local Authorities to be on the lookout for the water being on sale and informed consumers through relevant media.
She added: "We will be talking to Hackney to get more details about the latest discovery of Zam Zam water on sale in the local area."
Analysis carried out by the borough revealed twice the level of arsenic and nitrate permitted by law.
"The Muslim community are revering this water as a blessed water and when they see it they buy it and buy loads of it."
Zam Zam water originates from a 14-foot well in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and ritually drunk, packaged and taken home by millions of pilgrims every year. According to Muslims, the water was first made available thousands of years ago by Prophet Ibraheem’s (Abraham) son - Isma’eel (Ishmael). Muslims ever since have been making use of the medicinal qualities of this water.
In 1971 the water was tested in European laboratories proving it was fit for drinking purposes. The results showed a greater quantity of calcium and magnesium salts in comparison to city water; a factor claimed to refresh tired pilgrims. It also contains fluorides that have an effective germicidal action.
Hassan Khayat, the commercial attaché for the Saudi Arabian embassy confirmed as far back as 2005 that "Zam Zam water is listed by Saudi Customs amongst the prohibited commodities for export.
"It is also not allowed to officially trade in Zam Zam water within or outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia".
Andrew Foster, Head of Environmental Health Hackney, said that his team has worked to make sure the water is not sold or distributed, with effort being expended towards disrupting the supply and making sure it did not reach the market.
"We’re involved in liaising with the FSA to make them and other authorities aware of the problem.
"Illegal food and its removal has been a priority.
"We also liaise with other boroughs; we meet them on a sector basis; there’s a London-wide co-ordinating group where discussion takes place at the level to make sure people work together," he said.
Dr Teinaz also said these traders had misled the authority at air and seaports for years telling them it was for external use.
"I would like to urge those selling the water to fear Allah. They’re making money at the expense of their brothers and sisters’ health who will end up very ill by consuming the contaminated water," he said.
He added: "It is very sad to see a Muslim cheating another Muslim.":nono:
He also advised Muslims who encounter this "fake Zam Zam water" to report it without delay to their Local Authority Environmental Health or Trading Standards Department.
"The teams will remain vigilant, and we will not hesitate to remove any illegal food – meat or water – coming into the human food chain in the London Borough of Hackney to protect not only the Muslim community but all the residents and visitors in Hackney since they deserve to eat food that is fit for human consumption."
