Saving Raw files?
Published by: rose 2009-01-09

  • Is there any advantage to saving Raw files as 16 bit Tiff's?

  • If you mean as opposed to saving them as an 8bit file, like 8bit TIFF of JPEG then yes there is. Especially if you plan on editing them again. You can stretch a 16 bit file much more then you can an 8bit file and still keep continuous colors and and tones. The 16bit file contains many more discrete levels, once you convert to an 8bit format that extra information is lost and can never be regained.

On the other hand if you are asking if there is an advantage to saving to TIFF as opposed to keeping it as a RAW file, im not sure there is an advantage. except maybe greater compatibility.
