If you are looking for gore, check out The Evil Dead 2 (not 1, you can watch 2 without 1. 1 is summed up. VERY funny but also scary AND gory movie) Event Horizon (SCARY but awesome), or The Host (more action and drama like but scary too. About a giant monster)
If you are looking for some scary stuff, try The Japanese version of Pulse, Dawn of the Dead (remake was scary but the original is better BUT you can see the remake too), or 28 Days Later
