so tired of explaining it but people need to know hip hop is a culter: hip hop clothing, dance, slanguage, art, and music which is rap. rap is the music of hip hop. a lot of people think hip hop and rap are two different musical styles noop!
A rap song is a song about pimps and ho's and gangsters and money and stuff like that.
A hip hop song talks about the hip hop culture and about real life.
They both have the same rhythms, the only difference is the lyrics.
Musically, there is no difference.

Thumbs down to anyone who says rap is 50 Cent and hip hop is Mos Def. You have no idea what you're talking about.
EDIT: The only exception between what would be rap and what is hip hop is the absence of rapping. For example, an RJD2 song which is instrumental hip hop, is still hip hop music. However, you wouldn't classify it as a rap song cause there's no rapping on it. For this reason I classify EVERYTHING as hip hop music, which is an element of hip hop in the cultural sense. Just like term Punk is not only a type of rock music, but an entire subculture.
