I have had no decent results with unsharp mask (perhaps I don't know how to properly use it), but I get a unnatural looking picture. I'm not trying to rework the impossible. Is there any recommended sharpening software that you use that is better than USM?
Thanks for your time
There's lots of different settings for usm. Try 25%, 5, 0, and then 500%, 0.2, 0.
The trick is not to sharpen too much, and then you won't get halo effects. I also duplicate the background layer and sharpen on that, so I can reduce the opacity if need be.

New duplicate layer.
Change light to "hard light."
Run filter/other/high pass at 10.0
set opacity to around 35%. Check for sharpness.
Merge down.
That should be it. It's a pretty good way to sharpen pics without getting the USM halo effect.

Thanks for the replies, while I appreciate the help, I guess it's time to learn about layering.
