Should i get a maltese or yorkie?
Published by: admin 2009-01-09
  • so should i buy a maltese or a yorkie?

yorkie:this one i think is kinda shy and nervous because when i tried to play with it the dog started to shake a lot like a nervous shake but it did like my hand and stuff so i thought it was kinda ok.(its ok for the dog to be nervous and shake right??) also its 8 weeks old i think so its still like a puppy.

maltese:this one was less nervous and scared than the yorkie because it started to lick me right away and didnt shake. It was kinda hyper well just a little bit. I think the maltese was 11 weeks old.

so which one should i get?(im not looking for what kind of dog like beagle,lab,etc.. just the maltese or yorkie?)

Do you think the yorkie will be calm down after a view days if i get it?

also which one is less active the yorkie or the maltese?

how much exercise does each one need?(like once a day, twice a day, every other day,weekly,etc..)

    thanks:)

  • It's really your choice ( sorry I'm not really helping).

The yorkshire terrier will calm in about a week or less.
If you're not going to sleep with the puppy in the same room, I sugess that you wear a old shirt or something that you're not going to wear forever and let the puppy snuggle in that during the night.

    The maltese......
Most all my friends had at least 1 maltese or yorkie.
I heard that maltese poop alot so if your ready to clean poop then i guess maltese might be the right dog for you.

Don't take my word for it.
But i do have a yorkie chihauahua mix.
    good luck!!!!!

  • In my opinion, both dogs are very attractive, or cute. However, both are also very "yappie" - high strung, nippy, and noisy. They can be very independent (difficult to train), and neither is the top of the mountain in terms of canine intelligence.

If your interest is in constantly grooming a miniature hair do, then either dog will fit your needs. But if you're looking for a companion animal, I'd suggest a different breed.

    Just my two cents.

  • Although I have never had a Maltese, I have had a Yorkie, and I have to say that they are the sweetest animals. The Yorkie my family has is not a nervous dog, but he does think he's a guard dog/much larger than his size. Any nervousness that you found in the Yorkie could be due to the fact that it's young and scared, not properly adjusted to the presence of those other than its owners, or it could be a prevalent part of its personality.

I'm sure that if you get the Yorkie and treat it well, it will not shake or act nervous around you, though I cannot say the same for strangers. I also have a Pomeranian, and she is always nervous...no matter how kind anyone is; it's a part of her personality. All dogs are different, even personality-wise. Also, any animal you get will be in a state of shock/fear when placed in a new home, so don't get upset that it acts nervous for a few days after you bring it home with you. Every animal my family has ever gotten seems to need a few days to mourn old homes.

I highly suggest the Yorkie over the Maltese just because of this one dog my family has. He's sweet, gets very excited when given attention, and loves everyone. Seriously, I have had many animals over the years...and I have never had one like him. I just really love him.

For him, the best exercise has been throwing a ball and letting him chase it and taking him on short walks--he has very short legs--at least every other day. He tires himself out all on his own, so even that is not always necessary. Also, I would suggest (if you have the option) to kind of look at different Maltese/Yorkie's until you feel as though you have found the perfect one because either will be with you for a long time.

I hope you pick the one you feel is right for you. (And it might also help to do some reading on both breeds to see which best suits your lifestyle/preferences...) Whatever happens, good luck.

  • Well something must be wrong with the Yorkie they are not dogs that cower in fear, their bold stubborn and curious, I wouldn't get it maybe it's sick.

the Maltese acted as it should to a new thing, I would get that but be prepared if your going to let the hair grown out to brush it at least once a day! (beware of mating)

And though they don't need much excersize they are very playful!

  • Oh, defiantly a maltese. Or, a maltipoo: a cross maltese and poodle; more playful than you'd expect!

  • Both dogs don't require much exercise. A good 20 minute walk will make them happy, though. Both dogs need about the same amount of training, depending on their personalities and how fast they themselves can learn.

First, you should take a couple quizzes to match a breed that is compatible with your *lifestyle.* It's an important factor. These quizzes also give you a quick bio about the dog breed that suits your life.

Then, you decide whether or not you'd rather rescue the dog from a shelter or animal rescue, or buy one from a reputable breeder.

If you are deciding to purchase a dog from a breeder, look at this chart first so you know what are good and bad breeders: http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Fair/...

When you're prepared and know what to look out for, check:

If you decide to save a dog, go to a local animal shelter or surf the web:

EDIT: To the poster above me, no good breeder would EVER produce a mutt. Good breeders improve and produce ONE breed, not attempt to add to the millions of mixes dying every year in shelters. Good breeders are registered to a major kennel club [i.e. AKC] and show their dogs, they do not breed mutts. Mutts, however, can be obtained at a pound. Cheaper than a "breeder," and saving a life, too.
